Burn the music to disc, it's yours. Technically, it's still illegal to rip your CD's into iTunes, but in reality no one really bothers about it. This is just the Fail doing its usual 'it's Apple, we must give them a kicking' journalism. They seem to have a real anti-Apple stance. Their tech writer, Rob Waugh, is totally pro-Android, very biased in his reviews, and that appears to be the Mail's stance.
Ebooks are trickier, because they're heavily DRM'd, and not easy to copy to disc and swap between devices, and that needs to be sorted out.

A quick search on ebay will show you can buy thousands of ebooks on one disc for a couple of quid. There's no need to swap between devices when they're that cheap
