MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
I know there are a few Bristolians on STW. I recently bought a house in Bishopston, and have a few jobs I need doing. Being new to the area I don't have any local knowledge regarding good, reliable tradesmen so I'm hoping to tap into the STW collective knowledge.
I need recommendations for:
General Builder/tradesman - For a bunch of small jobs such as dry lining a wall, some plastering, adding additional air bricks, repairing some external render, repairing window sills. Ideally I want someone to deal with all these smaller jobs at once.
Also to quote on the much bigger job of removing an unwanted chimney breast from the kitchen.
Wooden floors - we have exposed floor boards throughout the downstairs. I want these gap filled, sanded and re-finished.
Sash Windows - Got a few that need some minor repair work to the sash boxes and I want the windows themselves replacing with wooden double glazed sash replacement units, and draft proofing, would also need to be able to deal with two non sash windows in the kitchen.
Damp repair - already got a quote from Peter Cox that doesn't seem to be outrageous and the surveyor who came round seemed quite up front and honest about what he thought did and didn't need doing, unlike from another company who just quoted to do a whole load of work that I'm not convinced is necessary.
Plumber - to replace some radiators, includes moving at least one to a different part of the room.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
Edit: FYI 1900 ish mid-terraced Victorian house.
Cheers,
Stu.
My best mate's a spark down there and has a load of trade related contacts.
I'll send him a link to this thread 🙂
Either that or get yourself down to the coopers arms in Bedminster and arrange for people to do it for cash if your morals allow 😛
Good tip!
Bro in law is a sparks and is going to do any electrical work we need in exchange for beer and a place to crash when he parties in Brizzle, so that is about the only tradesman I don't need to find.
Cheers
I can highly recommend this firm: http://www.base-property.co.uk/
Expensive, but you get what you pay for.
Highly recommend Cleave Plumbing - ignore some of the hyperbole on the website (it was created as a favour by a friend of his, more as a holding page that a true business tool), just give him a call. DOES respond to emails as well 😆 Stu is a top bloke and works like a horse. He has a friend, Adam, who is a cracking builder as well....

I'll take a look at these recommendations. Cheers chaps.
Can't get youtube at work.
whilst not a recommendation for a particular person, i've used Rated People before to great success.
VERY prompt replies, very well priced and very good service all round. you can check reviews of the people etc.
For all your wooden flooring needs, deadlydarcy of this ere parish is your man. Brizolian for his sins.
I have heard that Stoner. Was hoping he'd pop up on this thread, but didn't say so, what with paging threads being against the rules...
his vanity searching will draw him here soon enough. He might even (shock horror) be working at the moment! 😯
Bump for the evening crowd.
Stuey, sorry, refurbs aren't really my thing. I'm more of a new hardwoods kind of guy. I can give you a number of a good plumber though if you need it.
Darcy, Thanks for responding anyway. The search for someone to do the floors goes on! Any tips or idea what sort of cost per square metre I should be looking at for a refurb?
I have a few recommendations for reliable plumbers now, thanks anyway.
Again, have to apologise, it's a bit of a finger in the air thing (and one of the reasons I don't do it). Prob somewhere in the region of £10-20 per sqm, depending on how much gap filling, state of the boards etc. Make sure they're using a good quality lacquer (and be prepared to pay) for the top coat. I've seen plenty of decent sanding jobs shagged with a cheap coating.
