From yesterdays Bristol Evening Post: (UK newspaper)
Outside Bristol Zoo is the car park, with spaces for 150 cars and 8coaches.
It has been manned 6 days a week for 23 years by the same charmingand very polite car park attendant with the ticket machine.
The charges are
£1. per car and £5. per coach.
On Monday 1 June, he did not turn up for work. Bristol Zoo management phoned Bristol City Council to ask them to send a replacement parking
attendant.
The Council said "That car park is your responsibility."
The Zoo said "The attendant was employed by the City Council... wasn't he?"
The Council said "What attendant?"
Gone missing from his home is a man who has been taking daily the car park fees amounting to about £400. per day for the last 23 years...!

That is a classic tale if it is true.
I am afraid it's an urban myth...much as I'd like it to be true. A classic Brizzle tale that for some reason has started doing the rounds again.

Oh you've disappointed me now I wish it was true 🙁 I think I may just carry on believeing it's true as it's a story that makes me feel warm inside and chuckle!!!

No I didn't. To be honest if I try to go deep into my memory recall is does ring bells, especially being from Cardiff and as a kid regularly going to Bristol Zoo but it's still a great story of intelligence!!!!
Even the Beeb fell for this one, i heard it being recalled on R4 the other day.
Same thing happened near my work. All summer a really polite dude sat on a deckchair collected £1 per car, in the unused cinema car park (now Tescos) Very funny.
Awww. I wanted it to be true. I had a mental picture of some weather beaten bloke sat in a bar on a tropical beach with a skip full of pound coins. 😥
