MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
A combo of lockdown and isolation from the family (wife in the at most risk catagoary), means that after 15yrs of not owning one I've bought an Xbox. Only the One S, not the new one as it's never in stock. I'm completely out of the loop as I swore I'd never by another console.
Downloaded untitled goose game last night, which is great, and I've cod warzone on the download today - any tips, things I should look out for / games I should Def get?
Also do I really need a headset etc?
Not told daughter yet as she's desperate for Minecraft.
I did similar at the start....
Haven't used a headset, do sometimes plug in my headphones if playing after the wife has gone to bed.
Ive found that I can just buy games for peanuts on a disk and are usually much more expensive to download. There is a whole back catalog of COD games, Resident evil etc that shops want rid of from their shelves.
I enjoyed Doom eternal, as its and 'easy' play, but couldn't get into RDR2, perhaps too casual a gamer to want to get invested enough in it.
Can't do the disc thing as it's the S download only version (didn't want a rack of games I never play, like my dvds I never watch). I usually, well I did in the past, try to complete a game before buying another.
I'm a fair way through untitled goose after one evening, as it's a 'family' game the first two levels were easy.
Warzone is a little daunting as when ever I've played more modern cod games Vs others on the internet at mates houses I'm terrible, and get killed every 10sec.
The Game Pass Ultimate is good value - it includes Xboxlive and a huge back catalogue
Don't get game pass ultimate yet. Will explain below.
Warzone is great. Play plunder as it will help you learn the game with a respawn (battle royale you only have 1 life, if you die you get a second chance 1v1 which if you lose thats it. I have seen a br game last 3 minutes!
Number of pages on facebook on the game and a couple of steamers like StoneMountain64 and Marley13 who are good to watch for plays and weapons advice.
I am the same, aging ps4 and only really cod and gran turismo, only play a couple of nights a week but still good stress relief and using stones loadouts have even won a couple of BR games.....(and loads of plunders)
Warzone is brilliant and worth perservering with. I was very anti-COD for years but it changed my mind. As a new player the SBMM will keep you in easier lobbies anyway.
For something that's free to play it is ludicrously good.
I bought (second hand) Forza Horizon 3 and Motorsport 7. Added a cheap Wheel and pedals combo and spent hours hooning around Spa.
Lonely Mountains DH
Race The Sun
Shantae: Half Genie Hero (if you like side scrolling platformers)
Doom (2016)
Free to Play wise I'd give Destiny a shot but Warframe is IMO better.
steamers like StoneMountain64 and Marley13
Yep, I've seen them - FB keeps prodding me with their visa. Tbh that's one big reason I thought I'd buy another console.
As a new player the SBMM will keep you in easier lobbies anyway.
That's good to know, also prob the issue I had playing on mates is that it thinks I'm at their level.
Get yourself a USB 3 external HDD.
Then, buy yourself RDR2 and enjoy of a month of roaming the 'Old West' during a simpler, covid-free time.
Xbox gamepass ultimate is great value at 10.99 a month.
But you can get it loads cheaper if you are starting a new account with it / not had it before. There's a "hack", but Ms know about it and approve.
Xbox live gold is a different monthly subscription at about 7 a month. It looks like it might be phased out, you can get pass codes off stores like cdkeys for a years subscription for between 30 and 50 pounds.
To encourage you to sign up for Ultimate, Ms will convert all existing live gold months to ultimate in a special deal. Up to 36.
So buy 3 years subscription to gold before you convert to ultimate. Cost me 99 pounds in December. For subscription that's worth about 400.
Check techradar site for more details, will try to find actual link.
Forgotten about red dead redemption - one of the best games I had on the original Xbox.....
Get yourself a USB 3 external HDD.
Will any do be compatible? I've a coupke spare ones I think.
Yeah, if you're on a squad with high-ranked mates they'll put you in the lobby based on your best team member.
Wazrzone is a MASSIVE download though, far larger than RDR2. O.K. for us smug PC types with our multi-TB M.2 drives but a bit of a headache on console.
Wazrzone is a MASSIVE download though
Yep 80% of the memory used up.
Vague question is vague. What sort of games do you like?
To encourage you to sign up for Ultimate, Ms will convert all existing live gold months to ultimate in a special deal. Up to 36.
Is that still a current deal? I converted mine like two years ago, I thought it was time-limited offer?
As above Game pass ultimate. Whatever is the cheapest way.
Access to a big back catalogue of AAA to indy games. Includes EA game pass so all Battlefield Games up to V and both SW battlefront. Titanfall games. Loads of the EA sports stuff up to last iteration including FIFA
The pass also includes RPG epics like Witcher3, Skyrim and Dragon Age Inquisition. All the Halo games, Forza games.
..and Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons
Just have a browse
If you've not played anything for years you are in the best position to get maximum benefit.

They were encouraging it in December , £1 first month too, with the new consoles. Did 36. Haven't looked since as it feels like we set up for a while
Forgotten about red dead redemption – one of the best games I had on the original Xbox…..
Get yourself a USB 3 external HDD.

It's the best game I've ever played, but I don't play much. Most of the time I'm happy to roam around fishin' and Huntin'. The world is huge and full of detail. Includes the US half of the RDR map, but it's multiples bigger.
I think any USB 3 HDD will work, it needs to format it so you can't use it for anything else.
I think I got 1month for a £1, then free until June /July.
What sort of games do you like?
Used to like GTA, Red dead redemption, the early cod games.
Think I had a couple of driving games (not the realistic ones though).
Forza Horizon 4
Batman Arkham series
Tomb Raider Series
Rocket League
Fallout 4
Do not play Elite: Dangerous. It will steal your life.

RDR is one of my all-time favourite games. I couldn't click with RDR2. GTAV might be more your vibe.
Can't comment on COD, I've always been more of an over-the-shoulder rather than FPS gamer. The Tomb Raider reboot, as PP suggests, is excellent. The Assassin's Creed series also, but there's a very recent thread on that.
You need Forza Horizon in your life. Either 3 or 4 is on Game Pass, I forget which, but you'll have a great time with either.
I think this is the hack Loum mentioned:
https://www.pcworld.com/article/3404524/get-3-years-xbox-game-pass-ultimate-tip.html
I forgot about it tbh as I've had Ultimate for a while
Any USB 3 will work, I think SSD makes a difference on the S but you're not talking about much. Definitely use it over the on board storage though as it's crippled for some reason.
What size of HDD do we all reckon? 4TB?
What size of HDD do we all reckon? 4TB?
Whatever you've got to hand I suppose, I've 'made do' with 1TB for a couple of years, it's never more than 50% full, that said I've got 100Mbps interwebs at home, so I don't mind off-boarding games I don't play.
With HDDs, the more capacity the slower they generally work, which might be a factor on load times etc.

Yeah this. I bought an Xbox One S when RDR2 came out (2 years ago?), and it came bundled with Forza Horizon 4 which I never thought I'd even play - I thought I wasn't really into driving games. But I must've put hundreds of hours into Forza and only about 2 into RDR2. Forza is AMAZING.
GTA 5 is obviously good although I prefer cruising around Forza land.
I just bought (SOT) Tomb Raider which is nice for casually dipping into.
Also, the media stuff via xbox is really good - better than my old Apple TV anyway. So a remote control is really useful. This one in particular:

If youve been off games (?) for 15 years, you've got a monstrous back catalogue to catch up on, that you can pick up for next to nothing.
Xbox 360 too, though check the back compatibility list before spending any money on those.
Ive not had time to really get into much recently, so while playin on Xbone, im dawdling around in older games. So of stuff ive really enjoyed in the past few years, in no particular order.
Dishonored and Dishonored 2 (its better, but plays like an expansion really, the only game ive ever finished and immediately played again) wildly under rated.
Dont waste you money on Fallout, i thought it was hugely disappointing. quite pretty for such a big game, but the story and quests are nothing but fetch quests.
Do spend your post apocalyptic wasteland budget on the Metro Redux set (Metro 2033 and Last light remastered and bundled together). Brilliant.
If youve not played it yet, (Its getting quite "elderly" now), Elderly Scrolls V: Skyrim. Get the Xbone version and load the graphics mods to bring it closer to modern standards. I think that must hold my hours played record, and i rebought it when i went from 360 to xbone.
Battlefield 3 was peak battlefield, but i imagine its servers are pretty quiet these days.
And if you want battle royale, APEX legends is great.
Must have played warzone for an hour or so last night - of which less than 5min was actually spent deployed and in the actual game
Also RDR2. £89.99 wtf!!!!
Ignore me - didn't read it was a Xbox One S!
Also RDR2. £89.99 wtf!!!!
This is why I haven't been tempted by a Series S.
It's £30 on CD keys, but it's worth reading through what hoops you might have to leap through to install it.
Frankly they're taking the piss with RDR2 on Xbox store. £36 for the 'story mode' which I took to mean the normal game, and not the 'ultimate edition' but it's just the story mode, it's more again to play online.
Or it's £22 if you've got a BR drive.
When I return after a big gap (went from original XBOX to an XBOX One X a couple of years ago) - I played though all the Halo games in sequence which was a lot of fun.
Oh yeah, because it's mandatory for me to spam this on every gaming thread,
One of the absolute best games I've played in years is Life Is Strange. It's five episodes and the first episode is free. It's probably not for everyone but if you like slow burn narrative-driven games then it is just superb, I've never been so emotionally invested in a game in my life.
Dark souls 1 and 3 and divinity original sin 1 and 2 are probably my favourite games, lots or replayability.
