Johnson was/is an opportunistic bastard but unless my memory is fading I don’t recollect him campaigning to stay in the EU in 2016

He didn't think leave would win and that Dave & any remain successor would continue to be plagued by ERG nut jobs & the loss of votes to UKIP. Campaigning for leave would boost his credentials with them next time the PM job arose, but the leave victory put a spanner in that plan and a bigger spanner in no10.

Oh right, join the Scottish Conservatives then.
Their members still get to vote in the UK tory leadership election

He was probably just winding us up! I'm sure he has better things than revenge to do on Christmas Eve.

I’m sure he has better things than revenge to do on Christmas Eve.

Driving to Barnard Castle maybe...

He'll be waiting - there's no point releasing anything now when everyone is trying to get through Christmas without getting Covid and there's no (or greatly reduced) instant news feed to pick up on it and a reduced audience for it.

He didn’t think leave would win and that Dave & any remain successor would continue to be plagued by ERG nut jobs & the loss of votes to UKIP. Campaigning for leave would boost his credentials with them next time the PM job arose, but the leave victory put a spanner in that plan and a bigger spanner in no10.

This...
Johnson said what he needed to say to advance his career. Like any populist leader, he waited until it was clear which way the wind was blowing then leapt in front shouting "follow me!". The ideal scenario would have been a narrow Remain victory because that would have given the ERG the impetus to ditch Cameron for a "Leave" leader and once in place he could have carried on riding that populist bandwagon - after all he had a large part in creating it with his totally made up articles in the Telegraph! Sadly, the bus thing put paid to that plan and he was left with having to do Actual Work. Which is why we're all now screwed.

Drink fuelled chat with Conservative voting relatives… Johnson is not to be trusted, and Truss is as thick as two short planks… so it’s not just an echo chamber thing.

I can imagine many Tory voters would strongly agree with that analysis, including sober ones.

Same reason as why the move to allow foreigners in to staff care homes was announced today - keep it under the radar a bit to stop the brexity types noticing it, or if they do notice they’ll soon forget etc.

So he's been nowhere to be seen for ten days, then when he does make a brief appearance his answer when asked where he's been is 'I've been in this country, where do you think'

Given that the man is a compulsive liar, I think it's probably safe to assume that he's been on his hols again, not in this country at all.

I wonder who's private island he's been staying on this time?

Another round of Dodge the question until it's revealed that he's stayed at some remote villa in the Maldives, then repeat until it's revealed that some-one else has paid for it, then repeat until it's revealed who paid for it....ad infinitum.

According to the Guardian he has been staying at Chequers. I suspect that as Prime Minister sneaking undetected out of a UK airport probably isn't feasible.

I doubt he'll have been in the Easyjet queue at Leeds/Bradford

You'd also have thought that at the height of lockdown last year it would be unfeasible to have a lot of parties, but there you go....

A whole state conspiracy!...... including the Met and the RAF!

And all coz the geezer didn't fancy spending Xmas at Chequers.

Well it seems to have fooled the Guardian. Although not necessarily some punters on here.

We're now at the point where him telling the truth would be the shocking outcome.

What do you mean you've not been sunning it up in Mustique with a tory donor? You've been at home with your new child? Are you unwell, Prime Minister?

This. "In the country" could well mean at Chequers. In "this country" would have made me suspicious.

Thats just Johnson though isnt it?
He isnt used to the media doing their job and asking him awkward questions so doesnt handle it very well even if there is a valid explanation. His default is to waffle and bluster.

Even Geidts response is tripping over itself to make it sound like he's bending over backwards to let him off

Insiders said much of the blame for the lack of clarity over the donation has been apportioned by Johnson and Geidt to the process surrounding Geidt’s first inquiry into the flat loan.

Did the Tories learn absolutely nothing from the Owen Paterson backlash?

He’s a hypocritical little shit is Cummings – he had his fingers in most of the pies in Downing Street and now he’s trying to come out of it all smelling of roses. Acted like he ran the place while he was there, breaking rules left right and centre; now he’s on the outside he’s turned into a smarmy git by slagging off everyone who’s still there.

A pretty concise summing up, I’d say. Really couldn’t put it better myself.

The phone photo is photoshopped

As someone who used to do that stuff professionally, it’s a pretty good job, very convincing to most people, it helps that the photo is very ‘soft’, and I had to look very close, but there’s a definite light ‘halo’ around the bottom edge of the phone. I’m impressed, neat bit of work by someone or other. It did make me smile when I saw it.

That goes all the way back to the first talks with India about brexit- government said "no visa changes, that's a red line" and the Indian government simply said no worries, talks are over, there's nothing to discuss if that's a red line. They didn't negotiate or anything, just said, talk to us once you've folded.

It's no accident that our cabinet is comprised of people deemed to be hard-right, libertarians, the idea was that they'd all see Brexit through while the ERG rabble-rousers in the backbenches brayed from the sidelines without actually doing anything. However, it would seem that ideological zeal is no substitute for competence during a global crisis.

Johnson's populism is on the wane. None of the jockeying successors seem offer anything other than baked-in unpleasantness and/or stupidity.

That is the problem with populism, it is empty. A good way to get into power but once in power it is not quite as simple. Takes a good few years for the idiots who fell for it to work it out but they work it out in the end. With Boris it has been pretty quick for them to realise but that was helped by the pandemic as you say.

They're not idiots for falling for it, very clever people fall for con tricks all the time. The idiocy comes from not admitting they were conned, how many pensioners are fleeced of life savings but don't report it because to do say admits they were fooled, and that feels worse than doubling down and pretending they're happy paying £20K to have their gutters cleaned or driveway swept.

"coming soon in 2022"

Presumably she means just as soon as they've trained up a few thousand police officers to replace the ones they cut over the previous 10 years...?

FFS, it's another populist slogan. "coming soon"?! It's supposed to be standard government policy, not the next installment of Jurassic World... Christ that woman makes me angry, I could happily hit her around the head with a large fish all day.

She’s already shown a penchant for dressing up in police uniforms. If she ever got a sniff of the top job she’d have gone full Gadaffi within a week, with military regalia including a chest full of medals she’d awarded herself, and regular military parades

Actually… she’d probably quite like the idea of death squads to ‘disappear’ those who she deems to have wronged her. The woman is unhinged

I'm not sure whether Priti Patel's apparent low approval among Tory Party activists is something which should be celebrated.

I would have thought it is more likely that it is due to her being seen as too soft by Tory Party members than too right-wing.

I would expect the average Tory Party member to be firmly to the right of the present government.

Because to a casual observer of details, she's out there chatting to the colonials and signing deals to make Britain great again.

Doesn't matter that those deals are damaging to some UK industries because a) it's not in the papers they read, b) if it was it'd be fake news, c) we overcame it in the war, d) foreigners are stupid so actually we'll benefit, e) all of the above.

The actual issue is most pubs get free glasses from suppliers (within reason) so you can have Guinees, Coors, Stella glasses etc. etc. depending on what beers you sell.

There isn't and never was a ban on the traditional pint glass with a crown etched onto it. It's just that a pub isnt going to buy them when they get free, perfectly good glasses from thier suppliers.

Well, we’re just going to have to put a stop to all that traitorous nonsense, aren’t we?

For a start we can stop importing all that foreign muck, then every glass should have a Union Jack on and a little mechanism inside it, like those birthday cards do, so that as you tip the glass to drink it plays Land of Hope and Glory

He said people have been worried about inflation for a very long time and those fears have been unfounded

- all past tense

He didn't say we shouldn't worry about them now, in the present tense.

It's not his fault we just don't listen properly.......

Can't see Truss/Sunak being in any particular hurry to replace Bozzo. They'd likely want the local elections in May over with first so he can take the fall for those (and the ongoing impact of Brexit) before they strike the blow. If that idiot can keep his snout out of too many scandals until then he still might hang around for a few more months.

Yip… they all know what’s coming, most of all Boris.

He’s a dead man walking. He’s got until May then it’s all over

In the local elections they’re going to lose big to Labour in the north (presently polling 16 points above the Tories in ’Red Wall’ seats) and get clobbered by the Lib Dem’s in the South.

Those letters to the 1922 Committee are already written, but everyone is hanging on for him to take the rap for an electoral drubbing before they all start fighting like rats in a sack for the poisoned challace

Im hoping its Truss that gets the job.

Trying to be Thatcher v2.0 is unlikely to go down well with many as she is still despised by a large chunk of the population.

Secondly, she is awful in front of a camera. She's not likable, can't think on her feet and will just further implode her party.

She will be a liability on the campaign trail too.

FTFY.

Agree about the council elections - all the Red Wall stuff in the North - they're absolutely outraged by the whole abandoning of the levelling up (whatever that was supposed to mean), HS2 eastern leg cancelled, most of NPR cancelled. All those promises to the northern cities of Bradford, Hull, Leeds, York and so on. All gone. Everyone feels betrayed, they won't be voting Conservative again in a hurry. It'll be a big message to Boris that one.

Liz Truss would be a similar gift to Labour as Corbyn was to the Tory’s

As thick as mince, hopeless at being interviewed (you can literally hear the cogs slowly grind into like when she’s asked a question) and like you said; a third rate Thatcher tribute act is not going to play well with many other than the senile old Home Counties racists who make up the Tory membership and will vote her in

Corruption in plain sight. Didn't even have the intelligence to separate the demand for cash from the quid pro quo. Would be an obvious and immediate resigning issue for pretty much any PM of a previous era.

The media needs to get stuck in, not let him get away with his 'followed the guidelines at all times' bullshit.

I find it difficult to belive they didn't get the cleaners in between May moving out and Johnson moving in. It'll just get billed to the tax payer anyway, so why not get it cleaned?

Also, despite what I think of May, I'm quite prepared to belive she's a bit more house proud than the current PM.

Boris Johnson again cleared by Lord Geidt because there is no evidence the PM knew the proposed Lord Brownlow-chaired trust was funded by Lord Brownlow himself

He was talking to Brownlow to get funding approved before the trust was set up. So it’s irrelevant who would eventually fund the trust… IT DIDN’T EXIST when he asked Brownlow to approve payment for the work.

Whitewash.
