Cumstains makes me wince

I solved this by avoiding dark coloured sheets....

Or is that the name of a Steel Panther album? If not, it should be.

Sorry - immature and puerile but I couldn't help it.

It seems it’s perfectly fine to undermine the UK economy for personal profit as long as you wave your little Union Jack as you do so and talk like Mr Chumley Warner

If you’re a disaster capitalist then English Nationalism really is the gift that never stops giving

Sadly so true, there are a few deluded fools at work who honestly think we still have an empire and spout guff about "once we are free from Europe the world is ours!"
I just shake my head and slowly walk away.

Yep... a big chunk of the UK population have had images of spitfires and talk of the blitz spirit used to sell them a sepia tinted dream of empire.

In reality Boris and his fellow snake oil salesmen, responsible for this, are doing the polar opposite of restoring ‘Britain’s glorious colonial past’.

They’re going to cause more damage to the British economy than any foreign power could ever dream of inflicting. We’re placing economic sanctions on our own economy. Declaring a trade war on ourselves.

Utter madness! And they’re doing this to make a quick financial killing for them and their mates, then they’ll be off, leaving carnage in their wake.

They’re correctly assumed that if you wrap it up in red, white and blue while singing Rule Brittania, you can literally get away with anything

It’s tragic

'Blitz Spirit'.

The big difference being that there actually was a proper threat in those days, which wasn't self-inflicted.

I imagine the rest of the world look at us with a mixture of amusement and pity.

The Stranglers played Grassington Festival a couple of years ago, during No More Heroes they added an extra refrain:

"Boris Johnson, he ****ed the country and did a runner"

Sadly prescient so far.

The thing about the "blitz spirit" is that in this case, brexiteers, covid spreaders, mask deniers, and government racketeers are the luftwaffe.

That’s what influenced people’s vote for or against Brexit though, wasn’t it?

You take the easy fantasy option if you have spent the last 25 years reading 'newspapers' that tell you how outraged you should be by stuff that actually doesn't really affect you. And that direct your unwarranted anger at strategically chosen minorities.

I don’t know if public enquiries will still be a thing when this lot are done.

They will, but they'll probably resemble this:

ctk - let's get the facts straight.
Piers has been hammering johnson and the other clowns since any of them last appeared on GMB - 133 days and counting; he hammered them before their boycott started.
Dan Walker is soft soap - but his employer is beholden to the gov so they put up their stooges regularly with no fear of being questioned or criticised.

The tory government now refuse to have ministers be interviewed on Channel 4 News, BBC Today programme, BBC Newsnight and Good Morning Britain.

Have a think about that. That’s democracy, apparently

Anyone who might actually demand some answers and not just ask us what our favourite biscuit is, is now barred from proceedings

That’s how much respect Boris Johnson has for democracy

I see that Mark Francois, of the tory headbangers cult, the ERG has been quietly removed from his post of Leader. Does anyone know of any reason why?

He’s not just been removed from the ERG, he’s literally disappeared off the face of the earth. Not answering constituency’s enquiries. Not been in Parliament. All social media accounts deleted, etc.

That’s the trouble with being such an annoying little attention-seeking gobshite. When you’re not around, people notice.

Why could little Mark suddenly feel the need to retreat from public view? It remains a mystery...

Well, Monday's new Coronavirus restrictions have been made official now... and it of course means that from Monday Johnson isn't allowed to be with all his children at once, inside or outside... not that the older ones would be prepared to let that happen anyway.

[ Yes, that's an attack on the man not the policies. Not sorry. ]

I'm currently reading Peter Oborne's book on ****stan cricket. I've only noted one error so far (in a footnote) in a huge undertaking of research and corroboration. He is a fine author and researcher.

Johnson never believed in Brexit. He just took the opportunity offered. Well, screw him. If you are destroyed as a result of your own lies and dissembling then tough titty.

And duly noted the emphasis on 'sober'.

The lovely Marina Hyde on great form.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/sep/11/tories-trick-cock-up-dominic-cummings

No matter how much of a 360-degree shitshow the government’s handling of the pandemic or its own Brexit process has been, there are people even now claiming that every cock-up or exploding gambit is a genius tactic by our wisers and betters, brilliantly designed to achieve a very specific aim. I guess it makes these cheerleader analysts feel clever. Or to put it another way: every Rorschach blot looks like a fanny if that’s what you’re after.

That's worth much lolz. I may wait a week or so and pass it off as my own.

Marina is a sort of court scribe for this period in UK history. We won’t need historians to evaluate the era. Just publish her columns.

Looks like the rumours are doing the rounds again in Tory circles that the fly-tipped sofa (another one of Marina’s) is going to be gone in January. Ill health and ‘personal issues’ apparently.

But the other news is that Rishi is now out of favour as he had the nerve to raise the idea of tax rises for the rich to pay for everything and is therefore now regarded as a communist.

Names in the frame as successors? Dominic Raab and Priti Patel.

Remember the good old days when we had Dave and we didn’t think it could get any worse?

Predominantly, though, he is a ****.

Talk about someone who is utterly useless in any other sphere rising through politics and you are imagining him.

No intrinsic merit whatsoever outside of his little group.

He says no time for questions

So, at a time of constitutional crisis he hasn’t even got the time to bothered to answer questions from his own MPs?’

And he’s doing what else, exactly? Seeing as he pops his head up once a week, for the half an hour he’s legally obliged too

The arrogance of the man is unbelievable!

If there’s any justice in the world then when the carnage he’s instigated plays out he’ll be swinging from a lamppost.

Gove and Cummings too

It’s what they deserve

The majority of them are as thick as mince. The ones who weren’t have been booted out of the party

Just look at them! FFS!

I could put together a pub football team at my local with more intellectual clout than the morons presently occupying cabinet positions

They’re now doing things that any previous government would regard as unthinkable

Come next week though, every Tory MP will line up in Parliament and vote for Boris to break international law and plunge us into no deal, and all the resulting chaos because they’re all spineless, morality-free self-serving bastards

They’re going to bankrupt this country and make this nation a pariah state because they simply haven’t got the balls or principles not to

Dear god, I despise these ****s!!

binners, I don't agree with your assertion that

If there was ever a time for any MP of any party to demonstrate their integrity, it's now.
I'm still sufficiently naive to believe that MPs will vote with their conscience.
Let's see.
Having said that, my MP - caroline johnson, tory arse licker extraordinaire - will be voting for whatever johnson promulgates.
No relation to the bag of malignant cells masquerading as PM, apparently, despite the shared surname.
She is utterly useless - as is her namesake.

These are not stupid people, they can be clever but wrong. Sure they're mishandling the crisis but there's some very very serious sums being extracted out of taxpayers' money and private firms being bought into the civil service. Could do with a modern day Anthony Sampson to design a web of this lot's contacts and deceit. It is much more serious than most realise.

The contradictions of conservatism camouflaged by cultural wars. It is fascinating how the right can whip up support from people who clearly have not done very well out of the system and getting them disparaging socialist ideas and socialists. Boozo's masterly stroke.
NB Is Suella Braverman's mouth and head a fusion from two different people?

Don't give them too much credit. They haven't created some masterly 'all things to all men' policy fusion.

They've worked out how to segment some data to determine which lies to tell to which segment knowing that any chance of cross reference by the targets themselves is minimal.

They haven't done anything of intrinsic merit. They've taken the most cynical possible viewpoint and extrapolated from there.

from the comments....

Those voters still - broadly - support him and his goals. Just goes to show that the qualities we often think of as intrinsic to the British character, of honour and the belief in fair play, are just self congratulatory bullshit. When push comes to shove we’re snivelling, weak willed, dishonourable shits who’ll abandon any principle if we decide the prize is worth the cost.

Jesus wept, I’m ashamed of us. I honestly don’t understand how Tory voters can look themselves in the eye.

Millband's speech I found very interesting today. There were a number of pointed comments which went far beyond anything I've heard before.

He remarked this was all Cummings' idea and just being implemented by Boris. I hadn't heard anyone say anything so blunt previously.

There was also a barbed comment about knowing Boris had a lot on his plate so hadn't time to read his own bill. I wonder what he was alluding to? He didn't tie it to anything specific. I was expecting him to follow it up with a reference to Covid for example but he just left it hanging in the air.

The personal responsibility point was excellent.

He’s a lawyer, so it’s full of waffle, but to summarise: I’m voting for this because Dominic Cummings told me to

Ed was absolutely sublime, he took de Pfeffel apart and made him look like the vacuous charlatan that he his.

Public appetite for the Tories' desired no deal Brexit has waned now we know that it entails lots of lorries waiting, lots more (not less) "red tape" and potentially food shortages from January. Gove is unelectable, Raab a nonentity, Patel seems to be playing up her sadistic tendencies as a means of distraction from her incompetence, Truss is a national joke. The only thing that seems to be keeping them going is the constant lurching from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis.

Already emailed my MP, he's already in the doghouse as far as this small town is concerned - we're less than five miles away from a Brexit lorry park.

Don't forget that gove owed his continued political career to cummings who helped him out of a couple of major problems - potential resigning/sacking issues - as education secretary.
This clearly shows that cummings has found his useful idiots in gove and johnson.

Someone pointed out on twitter that in 2019 Tory MPs were threatened with the whip if they didn't vote for WA and now in 2020 they're being threatens with the whip if they don't vote against the WA. But obviously Boris and Cummings have a long term plan and aren't just bodging along.
