All the current BS being spread is setting the scene for the HoC committee investigation into whether Johnson intentionally misled parliament. He/they are playing the line that he reasonably thought what he said was correct. He wasn’t there, he didn’t know.
I'm going to predict that the HoC committee investigation concludes that he did indeed mislead parliament (because he obviously did), but he just shrugs and says 'so what? I don't think I have so I won't be resigning'
And then what? Theres nothing anybody can do. He's already shown he has a complete contempt for the electorate and what passes for our constitution, and that he'll trample over our democratic norms and conventions without a second thought.
A view from across the Atlantic.

Taken lessons in the art of lying from Boris Johnson?
A view from across the Atlantic.
It's almost as if it makes us look like a completely incompetent nation run by charlatan criminals.
The name of the cleaner?
Emanuel Gomes.
This is by far the worst aspect of everything that came out in Sue Gray's report yesterday. Low paid night-shift cleaners turning up in the middle of a pandemic, expecting to do their work in a relatively covid-secure environment (ie empty), then finding it full of ****ing revellers who then give them dogs' abuse for being upset about being put at further risk this way.
The normal response to this would be instant dismissals, not to just call them 'hard working civil servants'. It's clear this kind of Bullingdonesque culture comes from the top, just surprised they weren't burning 50 quid notes in front of them.
The whole place is riddled with entitled, over-promoted scum, and not just the politicians.

Taken lessons in the art of lying from Boris Johnson?
No, he thinks he's good at it, but I wouldn't take lessons from him in anything.
Taken lessons in behind the scenes ratting from Dominic Cummings?
I'd love to think that somewhere someones just biding their time with some photos of BoJo with a drink timestamped at late in the evening so his 'I was only there for a few minutes' line gets exposed too.
But he's undoubtedly got away with it again. I'm inclined to agree with Binners that even the priviledges committee finding he did lie wouldnt make him resign.
The whole place is riddled with entitled, over-promoted scum, and not just the politicians.
Yep.
Yet again Armando Iananucci was remarkably prescient, The Thick Of It knew about this shower of ****s 10 years ago

Every listener must have been completely incredulous, and I’m sure at some point everything Barclay has been sent out to say for Johnson this morning will be dumped and denied, and a new story (which we’re not even supposed to believe) concocted and given to willing followers to fill the airwaves and column inches with.
I caught the end of this but couldn’t hear much because a ten and thirteen year old were standing next to the radio chanting ‘Finish him, Finish him….’.
If Boris has done nothing else he has revived the esteem of the Today Programme presenters asked to interview the canon fodder asked to defend the indefensible each day. Its also helped me avoid swearing at the kids (Calling them Boris seems to be far more effective).
I can't see Johnson ever resigning
He's too trumpian
The Tory MPs are craven & immoral so won't boot him out, unless ..

It’s clear this kind of Bullingdonesque culture comes from the top
The Guardian editorial said precisely this. He's turned number 10 into the Bullingdon Club where the entitled get to do whatever the hell they like with total impunity, zero consequences and (literally) leaving the common peasantry to clear up their mess
Where we are is the inevitable destination of where we've been headed since these two moved in to Downing Street

You must have me mixed up with someone else.
Edit:
By the way- when was the last time you rode a mountain bike?
I listened last night. The smarmy attitude in his voice must have wound up sooooo many listeners.
After all the dust has settled, Boris going to be a figurehead around the world and hell live off that for the rest of his days. He never has to meet us. When he does bump into the general public they'll be too shocked to react.
Get angry and blow a blood vessel.
Be apathetic and just turn away.
The third option to hold them all in contempt and vote a fringe party in next election, instead of any of these so-called "professionals" is what needs to be done. How many people would it take to flood social media with that message?
the country has been left in a cost of living crisis just so they can announce this to distract from the sue grey report...
pain and misery for the poor, just so the PM can get a distraction.
I wish stammer would have called Johnson out on this before the report was released. feels like the opposition are constantly reacting, and not getting ahead of the way the Tories play the game.
The third option to hold them all in contempt and vote a fringe party in next election, instead of any of these so-called “professionals” is what needs to be done.
Haven't we got Johnson party because he worked so hard to present himself as not a "professional"? I think you might be asking for the revolution that has already happened, and got us to where we are now.
I wish stammer would have called Johnson out on this before the report was released.
You might have missed the last few PMQs, but just about all Starmer has been doing is saying that help with the cost of living needs to happen now (or rather needs to have already happened), and calling out Johnson and his team for delaying help and putting their politics before the very real needs of the public.
I’d love to think that somewhere someones just biding their time with some photos of BoJo with a drink timestamped at late in the evening so his ‘I was only there for a few minutes’ line gets exposed too.
Still rumours circulating that there are pics of Boris partaking in more than just drink.
You must have me mixed up with someone else.
LOL! That's the sort of blatant lying that I associate with Boris Johnson!
Not me, wasn't there, don't know what you're talking about.
That 'Thick of It' clip is so prescient. A lot of people saw Malcolm Tucker/Jamie as the villains of that series, just because they used to shout and swear at useless politicians and their aides. In fact it was the reverse - while they are deferential and apologetic to the cleaner, the seemingly affable Tory minister is the one whose mask slips and starts berating her.
The only difference is that Johnson and his useless band have got rid of all the staff who might keep them in check.
also, a relevant part...the complete disregard for national security.....
The rules and guidance were in place to prevent transmission. Mitigation measures were seen as essential to prevent the paralysis of work which had to go on during the pandemic. Coordinating the national pandemic response, was probably the most important work at that time
I would not call the SNPleft wing. A litle left of centre maybe. They only look leftish because everyone else has moved so far right
What TJ said. That. From within England it's possible to miss just how far we're sliding right... making pretty much solid centre ground politics elsewhere look "left wing", when they are not.
Just like in the US, calling anybody not on the Right a Communist.
@MoreCashThanDash - yes, I recall reading that somewhere (probably here!) but will they see the light of day? You'd think if they really did exist, the money that a newspaper would pay for the scoop would be very very tempting
Seems like a trickle of letters going in today.
Something I saw on Twitter which may not be too far from the truth, reported from a tory MP: 'Today is the day that Boris is saved, and the Conservatives lost the next election.' Here's hoping one part is true!
Frankly, right now I could cope with anything that looks like a social democratic government, in the European sense.
Seems like a trickle of letters going in today.
2 apparently
Seriously? 2?!!
Which means all but a couple of Tory MP's were happy to watch that shameless, self-serving debacle yesterday, witness the anger it (rightly) provoked, and conclude that they're happy with that.
And every time they do that, Johnson just becomes even more arrogant and untouchable and his contempt for us all grows deeper and deeper, and our democracy is dragged further into the cesspit that Johnson gleefully wallows in
Frankly, right now I could cope with anything that looks like a social democratic government, in the European sense.
Not a chance with filthy forrin notions like that. Traitor.
That he bothered to create a new account with a different username I mean.
Especially when he’s so easy to identify with his unique brand of sneering snobbery and propensity for calling anyone who disagrees with him a nazi. I guess when you do a massive flounce it’s a bit embarrassing to come back with the same name. 🤷♂️
So after all this, all we can do is tut.
Great.
Next election in 2 years the public don’t remember last week never mind what happened years ago.
I wrote to my MP Stuart Andrew and was simply ignored.
We can complain all we like but we are utterly powerless.
So, dannyh, what are you going to do? Have you contacted your MP? Found any like-minded folk in your area? March to London? Ride your bike to London whilst wearing a sandwich board? There's only so much shouting from the cheap seats that you can do and god knows I've had enough of you whining at those who voted for Brexit. So, I ask again, what's your plan?
You broke it... you fix it.
[ EDIT: apologies, I meant that to be flippant fun, it came across far too bluntly... but ultimately we can only sort this out if Johnson and his team of self serving incompetents lose their "get out of jail free cards" they are currently carrying in their top pockets that just say "got Brexit done" on them in big bold letters ... they have to lose the support of voters who still give them the benefit of the doubt due to their Brexit promises (the actual details of which seem to be far too conveniently forgotten) ]
So, I ask again, what’s your plan?
Think his plan is some sort of fascist state where people can only vote (and probably other stuff like having kids etc) if they are pure enough and conform to some standard defined by liberal elitists such as himself.
You must have me mixed up with someone else.
No, I don't think so. If you were as smart as you think you are you'd make it less obvious.
god knows I’ve had enough of you whining at those who voted for Brexit
To be fair those who voted for Brexit have to take a good share of the blame for enabling BoJo and the entitled idiots we have handed this country over to.
We were discussing the other day that the More honest Brexy slogan would have been “Give up control” - but it doesn’t really have the same ring.
PS - what am I personally going to do about it? Nothing. I think the Brexies chose to try and trash the UK, and I don’t think the damage is really repairable anymore. Maybe if they, the “winners” had treated the vote at 52:48 with a bit more respect then we wouldn’t be in this mess.
Who'd have thought that dannyh was gardentiger? Wow ... mind blown!
🙃
Is dissonance popping in so I can get the full set?
So, dannyh, what are you going to do? Have you contacted your MP? Found any like-minded folk in your area? March to London? Ride your bike to London whilst wearing a sandwich board? I'm not dannyh, I am gardentiger.
But I know I have to be careful around you, given your *cough* 'special' status.
Kelvin's comment will suffice - you broke it, you fix it.
But in actual fact I have done the first two things on your list.
I've contacted my spineless shit of a MP at least five times - never had a reply.
I've also been trying to cultivate like-minded local folk. They are all of a pretty similar opinion to me. It's just that sensible centrists often don't feel the need to roam around in packs for each other's protection from alternative views. The same goes for fallen hippies who voted Leave, now regret it and want someone to say "there, there, it is OK to be confused".
Why did you vote Leave, by the way?
^^^
I fully expect that post to 'disappear' shortly and a ban.
Just to get that on the record now.
I’ve had enough of you whining at those who voted for Brexit
I was born before the first referendum so I've endured 40+ years of whining leavers. 🙂
And once again:
Would Boris Johnson be prime minister if the UK had voted Remain?
It is a simple enough question.
No. Happy now?
And another thread falls victim to a lefty pile-on by the usual suspects 🙄
Getting back to the actual point:
What we should be worrying about more than partygate is what it actually illustrates.
It shows that as we enter what are going to be the choppiest economic times for a long time with a cabinet who are utterly and completely detached from the reality of lives lived by the majority of voters. I have never in my lifetime seen politicians more remote and ... lets be brutaly frank... clueless and uncaring as to the hardships being experienced by people
This lot are fundamentally ideologically opposed to anything that interferes with 'The Market'. Rishi is on his feet now and my own expectations of him helping anyone struggling are absolutely zero. It will be a lot of flannel but no action, because this government don't actually DO anything.
Record low unemployment... blah, blah, blah.... we must grow our way out of this ... blah, blah, blah....
And then maybe something about deregulation and further privatisation
Would Boris Johnson be prime minister if the UK had voted Remain?
Would Johnson be prime minister now if labour MPs and party staffers hadn't spent 4 years smearing and fighting against their own leader so that they could regain control of the party?
Would Johnson be prime minister if Jo Swinson hadn't colluded with the SNP to force an election or been deluded enough to think she could be PM?
Would Johnson be PM if the DUP hadn't cut off their noses to spite their face and voted for a soft brexit deal?
It's a fun game this whataboutery but it's a bit pointless.
Its not a 'windfall tax' its a 'Temporary Energy Profits Levy'
I wonder how many other Labour policies they're going to nick and rename?

Wish we had a big telethon-style counter to visualise the number of letters of no confidence progressing toward the magic 54.
a cabinet who are utterly and completely detached from the reality of lives lived by the majority of voters
Hi there Binners, hopefully I wasn’t piling on just responding to a comment someone made, but moving on…
How can they be detached from the majority of voters, I keep hearing how BoJo is a man of the people, able to connect with the common man (I’m not going to comment on his connects with women, I’ll leave that to others).
Yep, entitled, uncaring, I’m all right Jack, government who we would all be better off without.
Football teams in Britain seem to do better with foreign managers, maybe we should adopt the same approach with government? I hear a certain Merkel and Obama might be out of contract.
@chakaping Sturdy is my local MP, farmer and junior Brexy.
I did point out to him he was selling farming down the river with Brexit.
He disagreed at the time, but I understand his views may have shifted a little.
Record low unemployment… blah, blah, blah…. we must grow our way out of this … blah, blah, blah…
The current phrase du jour seems to be a "high-skills, high-wage economy."
How they plan to achieve this based on record low investment in schools and education and seemingly ignoring the huge number of people in absolutely vital but "low skills" service jobs* is beyond me. Maybe it means their own wages will be increased...
*I put "low skilled" in " " because you and I know full well that cleaners and baristas and delivery drivers are not "low skilled" at all; they are a specific set of skills and they are vital to the economy. The stockbrokers and hedge fund managers won't get far without their offices being cleaned and their coffee...
Random anecdote
walking out of Euston station looking at my phone trying to find a message, HS2 building works security guard asked me if I was lost, I explained I was just sending a message he replied, 'is it to boris johnson? if its say its from me too!' and we all had a chuckle
was pretty weird as, judging a book by its cover, Id say he looked like a stereotypical johnson fan, maybe he the polish really has worn off that turd
now if we could just flush him
No. Happy now?
On this small point, yes. Thanks.
Now I can just sit back and chuckle as dazh refuses to answer the same question - by posing umpteen less important (and mostly irrelevant) counter-questions. Daz's reluctance to criticise Brexit is revealing in the extreme.
When are the Lexiteers going to spring into action by the way? Surely the time to strike is now - when the economic damage makes a Socialist movement utterly irresistible?
😂

I fully expect that post to ‘disappear’ shortly and a ban.

Not sure why you would think that, dannyh. It's more likely that there will be a high-grade, full petticoat flounce first.
And another thread falls victim to a lefty pile-on by the usual suspects
I wouldn't worry about it. It is just one or two pages.
Johnson’s corruption will provide ample future material for the thread to get back on topic.
And stand as a monument to everyone who voted Leave.
🙂
Far right tory govt my arse! The thatcherites will be spitting blood. Wonder how many letters will be going into the 1922 committee on account that Johnson is a red tory wet?
https://twitter.com/PJTheEconomist/status/1529790374465654790?s=20&t=yGOhtTFVPipMrMMoYxfkWA
Rachel Reeves did a good job there of pointing out that they've just lifted and renamed Labours proposed policies and they are a government totally devoid of ideas.
I wonder if anyone is actually listening?
High skills, high wage economy.
Hmmm…
I’ve done this one before, but given our post Brexit immigration policy is specifically tailored to allow us to buy in high skill people, I think people who don’t get a good set of qualifications at the first time of asking from school / university should worry.
Because as mentioned above, we will still need low skill, presumably low wage people, and we can import them.
And little incentive for companies to train people up when they can just buy them in.
So the indigenous population with tend to be more constrained to low pay jobs they than were.
The “haves” are going to be OK, the “have nots”? Well you don’t miss what you never had, do you?
Do you?
Worry.
We need some more right leaning people to come to the defence of Johnson and his government... would make this thread more interesting.
Just a thought - people who are saying that we should have to show some expertise before voting.
How about people who are actually in charge of stuff have to show some basic knowledge about the job - you know, like the Home Sec trying to pass laws that are actually illegal, a culture secretary that has an understanding of culture, a foreign secretary who doesn't just view the world as an opportunity to try on other nations national dress...
You broke it… you fix it.

@kelvin, agree with you there but can't help feeling that many voters are simply "run down" with what's hanging over their heads such as the cost of living, lack of job security etc etc. The public surely are sick of lying politicians with heads in the trough along with second jobs all the while failing to hold the Government to account. The "controlled" opposition have no intention of ever rocking the boat, that's plain to see.
We need an uprising otherwise we'll see anarchy. Look to France for how to show dissatisfaction on the streets, disruption is what's needed and sends a powerful message.
Think his plan is some sort of fascist state where people can only vote (and probably other stuff like having kids etc) if they are pure enough and conform to some standard defined by liberal elitists such as himself.
@dazh, reckon we're heading that way with something similar to the CCP.
We need an uprising otherwise we’ll see anarchy. Look to France for how to show dissatisfaction on the streets, disruption is what’s needed and sends a powerful message.
Can you provide some links, please?
Also - will you be advertising your Leave credentials when you march?
To be fair those who voted for Brexit have to take a good share of the blame for enabling BoJo and the entitled idiots we have handed this country over to.
@igm I honestly believe that the Tories weren't expecting that result. The EU has been a massive trough for politicians and reckon that they wanted to continue on the gravy train.

Meanwhile, eight million households on means-tested benefits will get £650 paid directly into their bank accounts in two lump sums - one in July, the other this autumn.

I take a hard stance on that - do that and you don’t moan about the Price of Gas next January.

Never underestimate the warming properties of a Bacardigan
Now... be off with you back to your Daily Mail editorial writing duties, you wee scamp
while failing to hold the Government to account
Surely, at least SOME of the blame for the behaviour of the government is down to the people in it, and their supporters, rather than other politicians who are not in power?
Labour's policies acceptable to the tories? Unbelievable.
I honestly believe that the Tories weren’t expecting that result
I can agree with you on that at least.
Brexit was always going to make us all poorer
People were warned endlessly about it, that negative campaigning was labelled project fear and that was a genius move that helped Leave win
Doesn't change the fact that brexit has made us poorer
But no leave voter wants to admit that
I’ve no need to answer that as it seems to be a message for someone else. Crossed threads?
I'm referring to when you flounced under your previous username of dannyh. Hope that clarifies things.
We need an uprising otherwise we’ll see anarchy. Look to France for how to show dissatisfaction on the streets, disruption is what’s needed and sends a powerful message.
I'm not sure we should look to France - despite their many advantages (culture, climate, geography) they don't seem very happy with their lot.
was pretty weird as, judging a book by its cover, Id say he looked like a stereotypical johnson fan, maybe he the polish really has worn off that turd
One of my Mum's friends told her yesterday that Johnson has now to go.
Express buying, well-off pensioner in the Borders and long, long time Tory voter.
She might go LibDem at the next election, this was David Steel's constituency, or not vote - unsure which, but if her 'kind' are looking elsewhere then our Tory MP is toast.
How about people who are actually in charge of stuff have to show some basic knowledge about the job – you know, like the Home Sec trying to pass laws that are actually illegal, a culture secretary that has an understanding of culture, a foreign secretary who doesn’t just view the world as an opportunity to try on other nations national dress…
This shouldn't be funny.
So 8 million pensioner households get extra payments. Is that means tested?
I’m all for giving money to those who need it, but I’m not so happy that my taxes are going to support people who have generous pension pots, and property worth money the younger generations can only dream of.
Of course it’s the Tory government so they need a juicy carrot for their aging voter base, but it sticks in the throat that I have to fund a generation who have been far more fortunate than those that came after. Especially given a large majority of them voted for the very policies that have got us into this mess in the first place.
Meanwhile the youth of today can’t buy housing, and will be working until they drop
Anyway cinnamon_girl, I wouldn't worry too much about attending any marches.
The Home Secretary your vote enabled has pretty much outlawed it.
I’m not sure we should look to France – despite their many advantages (culture, climate, geography) they don’t seem very happy with their lot.
They're never happy. You're not a true French person unless you're finding fault and complaining about everything.
I’m referring to when you flounced under your previous username of dannyh. Hope that clarifies things.
It is totally clear, just addressed to the wrong person.
so how much is going to get pissed up against a wall in local boozer or wasted on a new playstation and how much will go on the leccy bill
Do you actually know anyone who's struggling to make ends meet at the moment?
Or just read about them in the Daily Mail?
