heading off for a month with the family in the campervan to france in a few week. ive got the EHIC cards (old E1 11)for the health bit, all our kit is insured through the euro cover on the van, do i still need ye old travel insurance, if so, any recommendations....
I use Insure&Go for a worldwide annual policy for 90 day trips on top of the EHIC, comes in at about £80 a year and covers me for 'extreme' mountain biking etc
EHIC just gets you the same state cover as a citizen of the country you're in, and doesn't include repatriation costs etc if you knacker yourself, so it's well worth looking into.
from my experience of getting sorted out in Alp d' Heuz the doc had no interest in EHIC or insurance just told me he did cash and I needed to sort the rest. The EHIC seems fairly worthless in France unless you are carried in, the insurance will sort out the rest and the small issues such as getting you and the family back to the UK (box or medical plane) and your car etc. Guy on our mega trip drove out solo, broke his arm and got the insurance to fly his missus out to drive them back. Options after that were looking tough & expensive.
Not going to suggest any bit read the small print especially regarding sports.
In a word - Yes
Blurb off NHS website:
The EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. It will not cover any private medical healthcare or costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts, being flown back to the UK, or lost or stolen property. Therefore, it is important to have both an EHIC and a valid private travel insurance policy. Some insurers now insist you hold an EHIC and many will waive the excess if you have one. For more information read our advice on travel insurance.
