Our old gas boiler has started making a funny whiny noise when firing up the heating from cold. It goes away after around 30 seconds and the boiler fires up no problems. Does anyone have an idea what it may be? Or where to start looking?
I do live in a hard water area if this is of any further use.

I'd leave it untill the noise didn't go away. My 15 year old boiler makes all sorts of noises from time to time. Never get it serviced and only had anyone out to it twice. Worchester bosch 240.

if you have a fan it could be that or it could be the 'soft light' not working which may lead to vibration and noise..

Fan sticking at start up - might need a clean?

If it scales up you'll notice short cycling ie the boiler switching the flame on and off before the radiators are fully up to temp and start switching off themselves via the TRVs.

Don't think there's a fan. The noise sounds like its coming from the airing cupboard. That's where the cylinder is.

Anything made in the last 15 years will have a fan to get a decent draft in the balanced flue.

If the noise isn't coming from the boiler itself, it might be the pump bearings getting noisy - or muck stuck in the pump itself. I used to have solder balls which went round my CH system and rattled every time they went through the pump.
