As some of you know, I have started a blog

https://theworldclassaccident.blogspot.co.uk/

It is a cold depressing Sunday with time on my hands so today I tried a Video instead.

It takes longer that I expected to edit it all together so probably only going to try it at the weekends, if at all.

Any feedback on the video and whether or not I should continue them in the Blog occasionally is welcome plus the merciless STW piss take of course.

All depends on the subject matter. If you're interested in that, then they're great; otherwise no point in watching....

+1

My reason is here. Still trying to work it all out to be honest : http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/facing-a-shit-9-months-thinking-of-starting-a-blog

Seems all a bit self promoting and egotistical but to be fair they are two of my great strengths.

I thought I would practice a bit this side of the operation in the hope of getting some kind of style or technique so that post-op it might be useful or interesting to those who are going through or planning to go through the same.

I had a private email conversation with someone from STW about an operation they were facing and what my thoughts were. This should turn into something similar but without the privacy.

As above really. If I was sat having a pint with you or something I might listen to your parasitic battery drain woes, but it's not generally the sort of video people seek out imho.

Well filmed and clear though.

I really don't get blogs ..why do people start them ?

They're a sort of modern version of a diary I suppose. Diaries though are usually only read by yourself.

I don't follow any blogs to be honest, though I'm sure many do.

Mostly people from here I guess

Pageviews today 86
Pageviews yesterday 72
Pageviews last month 763
Pageviews all time history 763
Followers 0

It has only been going a couple of weeks but I think the last number is most telling.

Any preference for the video or the pictures?
Anyone look at the pages listed on the right?

I guess it is really just a diary at the moment. Makes me realise how much time I spend fixing stuff though

The only thing more boring than a blog with feeble content is people constantly pimping their blog with feeble content. If you write interesting stuff, people will find it, share it, read it without you having to spam "look at my new blog post" everywhere.

I take exception to that, I only spam my blog here. When I have something worth bothering with I will let people who matter know about it.

If I am reading that right then we don't matter so why then ask us for feedback?

Just STW 'banter'

Nothing serous meant. Sorry if I upset your sensibilities.

Basically I use STW as a brilliant way of getting feedback. Positive, neagtive and down right insulting. None of what is said keeps me awake at night but does help inform my thoughts.

Google spends millions on 'sentiment analysis' and sells it for gazillions. STW is the best I can manage.

You are valued, your are special, you are an individual. Just like very other ****er* in the world

*hopefully will get approved/replaced by the swear filtr. Mods - change as you see fit

You really need to look at the best blogs, youtube accounts, instagram and FB accounts that are in some way in the same sphere as what you want to achieve and work from there.

Blogs (for the most part) are from a time when photo and video content wasn't anywhere near as easy to create, upload and deliver. Ask yourself what you want to convey, why you want to convey it and how best to convey it.

There's maybe some infered snobbery around blogs vs vlogs now - if you're a blogger you write, that makes you a writer, writers create literature, vloggers talk shit...blunt but hopefully you get my point. However if you are trying to convey something like you're battery video it would take a wall of deadly dull text, or a 3 minute video wherein you can be entertaining and informative.

There are some great people on youtube and instagram who marry photos with text, or post fantastic instructional videos. You need a direction, you need a purpose and you need to limit your future bloggery to one thread 😉

Because they want to write something / have something to say.

Try to see it as like doing knitting or watercolours, but with words.

Ok. I need to decide on my subject focus.

That is the feedback I was after. Thanks!!!!

At the moment it seems to be fixing the bloody truck but I will change that.

Give me a week and I will see what I can do.

Thanks All!

Cha****ng ..thanks but I was being ironic.. 😉
So basically it's someone who might not be that famous but thinks that there are people out there who want to read the bollocks they espouse..on a regular basis
I would have thought a forum could fix that itch .. 😀

I think videos are a generational thing.

I can read faster than people can talk, doubly so when 30% of any video is usually filler. I click an interesting-looking article on Facebook and it takes me to a placeholder page with a video, nine times out of ten I'll just close the page.

My late teens / early 20s apprentices are the opposite. They won't sit there reading a lengthy tract on a page, but give them a YouTube video of the same thing and they're all over it.

So I guess the question is, who's your target audience? And perhaps secondary, what are you gaining with a video over text?

Text it is.

Easier and more familiar to me.

Video takes effort an feels awkward

I think vlogs need to be a bit snappier and light hearted ... casey neistat is good at coming over like that ... similarly linus tech tips comes over as that slightly happier go lucky approach ... and as you've found out, that needs effort and work at both the creation of footage and the editing stages.

Blogs on the other hand pace at the speed of the reader ... not the creator.

Didn't know you had a 3.6 tdv8. 4.2SC here. fullfatrr.com?

Think Zoella. She's worth gazillions, and has lots of deeply edifying stuff to say.

I am afraid that your blog is basically stuff written down. That may be what you are trying to achieve but I can't see why I would come back to your diary week in week out? Sorry but it needs a bit more point to it and some "zing". You did ask for feedback

It pretty much does. I used to keep a diary of some of my trips - just as a personal reminder really. I "published " a couple on here and folk replied that they enjoyed them. From there, I just decided it was easier to find them if they were hosted together rather than spread across another site or sites. Folk do find my blog and, as a result, I get quite a few emails asking for route advice, or about bikepacking etc. I guess I've started to write a bit differently knowing I wasn't the only reader but I'd still write them even if I was the only reader.
