Yes, I know someone who was killed BASE jumping a few years ago - when it goes wrong, you have very little chance to recover the situation.

Must be hard to gauge your relative location to a fixed point if you're taking off from a chopper. I imagine jumping off a fixed point to be a little easier.
The phrase "doing what he loved" doesn't make it any easier for his family but I guess it's at least relatively painless and very quick. There'd at least only be a few moments of ohhhhhhh sh.....
