Has anyone got any pointers as to what I can do?
T'other day, I allowed Windows to apply about a dozen updates of various sorts (Win 7 Pro, 64bit) after putting it off for a number of weeks - I always had something else to do.
Anyhoo. Updates applied, laptop rebooted a number of times. All good until I take it to a client and connect it to their projector (HDMI). Nowt.
Took it home, tried different HDMI cables and devices (2x telly's and 1x monitor) and not a thing - no picture, no sound. Nothing.
I've updated the graphics card drivers to the latest version and still no joy.
I've rolled back to the restore point just before the updates were installed - no good.
Any ideas?
I don't really have the time (or inclination) to rebuild the thing from scratch - although it could probably do with it, and I can't afford to replace it.
Shall I kill it until it is dead?
If you've done a system restore to a point in time before the updates were applied and it still doesn't work, it's unlikely to be caused by Windows Update.
When did it last work?
Sorry if this is stating the obvious, but is there a setting you need to enable? What do you see in the display Properties when the external screen is connected?
Do you need to toggle the HDMI on/off? On mine you need to press Fn-F3, although it usually auto detects.
With VGA you could often fix that by making sure the cable and projector were plugged in while the computer was waking up as for power saving the port was asleep. Maybe the same trick will work with you hdmi?

Yes, this is a common annoyance. A little icon on one of the keys which looks somewhat like a screen. Fn and whatever key that is, see if it springs to life.
It last worked about 30 seconds before I installed the update when it was connected to my telly. Disconnected it, applied the updates it rebooted and I went to bed.
Next day at the presentation, it was borked.
All settings have been checked a dozen times and the display adapter even recognised the HDMI device I connected it to at home (Sony TV) but no output.
Maybe I have put the cable on the wrong way round, so the little trons are all going back into my laptop?
Typical windows, that's why I'm so glad I haven't had a windows machine for 6 years
Yes, I've tried switching between extended, duplicate and HDMI only. Nothing (Fn+F8).
I've also powered everything off and booted up in various combinations.
