Little update following my post about decent boozers there last week.
Stayed there Fri night despite Antur Stiniog DH being closed as had B&B booked.
Have to admit I was a bit apprehensive following the mostly negative 'you'll die/get bummed/get your bike nicked'-style responses.

TBH the B&B was brilliant - cheap, very well appointed and a brill host called Glenys.

£28 pppn, secure indoor bike storage, clean comfy ensuite rooms with great showers, mega breakfast - good advice about where to go eat/drink - we'll def stay there again when we rebook Antur in the summer when hopefully there will be less snow 😉

Ate at Ty Gorsaf on the main drag - hotel that does amazing lamb burgers - £8, tasty as you like and full to bursting. The locals were friendly enough if you didn't go there with a 'I'm better than you' attitude. Cell B (old police staion and courthouse) over the road is a great trendy bar that does seem a little out of place but worth a visit - does nice food too;

Pleasantly surprised...might venture to a few more pubs next time, but much better than I thought it would be.

drove through for first time in years on saturday on the way to CYB & thought it seemed a pretty decent place, B&B sounds great value

Went last year and found it great, B&B was a converted chapel, great host and no probs in any of the boozers, everyone seemed pretty friendly, definitely going again.

You'll be booking in that Post Traumatic Stress Councillor next? Give it time till the twitching, the thousand sheep stare and the occasional welsh outbursts occur 😉

Why would you go there (anywhere) with that attitude?

Great stuff 😀

Your next mission, should yo choose to accept it, is to go for a pint in the Bull in Deiniolen. 🙂

Points will be awarded for style, time spent in pub and choice of exit - you will be penalised for leaving via the window.

You can always take the soft option and try the Wellington down the road first. 😀

You been in the Bull Kev?
It closed for a while but it's back in business now.

Usually try to time my visits to coincide with England getting beat at something. 🙂

Reminds me of some of the pubs in Moston and Blackley when I was growing up. 😀

What's wrong with that timc.

RS: No haven't mate, I'm up for a pub challenge though! Next time I'm round that way we'll pile in for a gander!

If you do go into the bull, please get someone to video it and post it in here. I have a friend who was born and bred in brynrefail and he wouldn't go near the place. Makes the royal oak in rachub seem salubrious!

Votchy - the converted chapel is where we stayed, and will next time too.

Fervour - something the landlady at the B&B said that kind of makes sense. The area is pretty desperate with not many jobs and money scarce. SOME people that are more affluent coming and staying there from elsewhere might take a view that they are 'better' than the people that have next to nothing and that feeling can be accentuated when they see the 'have nots'.
They will be few and far between but people like that do exist, and the locals probably pick up on it when they see the '£5k bikes' (I assured landlady none of us had bikes that pricey!) and people all outdoor-labelled-up and might resent them, though they shouldn't because the area would be more of a dump without that money coming into the local economy.

Without Antur Stiniog I admit there would be little reason to stay in BF, but if you are DHing there the chapel is well worth a stay 😀

I popped into The Bull during my climbing days. Seemed OK, but I obviously caught it on a good day. I vaguely recall an (English) club that had its annual dinner there, so it can't have been all that bad. the only pub in Wales which actually felt threatening to me was in Holyhead.

Deniolen doesn't quite have the welcoming ambience of Llanberis, obviously... 😀

The Bull isn't too bad!

Our club hut is just past Bus Stop Quarry, so go through Deiniolen a lot.
I like it, but you can see why Dave Brailsford left.
Not a lot of work round there these days.
I'd have loved to have seen the place pre 69, before the quarry closed.

One lad, a mate of my stepdaughter from Salford Uni Climbing Club ended up playing in a pool competition with the locals in The Bull - he had a great time.
A couple of people have had dodgy experiences, but tbh I wouldn't have served them either. 🙂

Zokes, not tried the Royal Oak - will have to give it a try next time we do the Carnedds.
