yes that is a bit lame, but since it doesn't sound like you know her very well that'll be just fine. 😉

how much were you gonna spend?

Depends on the girl, relation to you and your budget really.
If she's got an iPod you could get iTunes voucher, or Amazon voucher (books or music).
Also on the iPod theme, we got our 9 year old a radio clock alarm with iPod dock for her bedroom. About £40 and sounds amazing for the size. She loves it.
If she's got a DS, how about a game?
Pyjamas - my girls love getting new PJs
Book if she likes reading
Horse riding lessons?
Cinema and meal out with a couple of mates?
DVD?

Just a couple of ideas.

Aye, she is encouraged to read plenty by her parents, so, an ipod shuffle will be her gift.

Cheap digital camera?

My god-daughter loved hers at that age, taking pictures of her family, mates, pets etc.

Second the diji-cam. Little girls seem to love taking pics of each other and stuff. Part of forming their identity in relation to others. Great suggestion.
