Must do. Have a look at the duffbag ad / video, you can get one in a golf with seats up.

Passat saloon boot is quite large. The opening is small though. You may have trouble getting it in through the hole depending on your bars and whether you drop the seat.

A Golf hatchback opening is massive in comparison.

are you looking at buying a passat? Get an estate I could fit my bike in with both wheels left on with rear seats down 🙂

Possibly. The good deal I can get is only on the saloon

Take a clean bike to a VW dealer and check it out for real.

Being replaced soon, hence the discount. That looks a decent price though (if new). Saloons are a bit rubbish for transporting bikes. Consider a tow bar or roof rack?

@blind, blimey you can't get that much of a Golf for that ! [s]By 140 you don't mean a 1.4 engine, that sounds a bit weedy. Off to check ...[/s] ok so 140bhp tdi, should go ok although I suspect you'll always wish you had the estate though. As I posted buy a duffbag and pit bike in boot, mine goes into a Micra CC ( large boor for a small car as it takes the roof) plenty of folk on here have posted pics of bikes in back of MX5's

Not bothered about it being replaced. Seems a lot of car for the money. I would get a tow bar fitted but for some longer trips I would need to pack the car inside due to the areas I visit.

The other option is a Golf Estate 2.0 150 GT DSG for £21k but I prefer a bigger cabin and I'm not sure about DSG. Will have a look at both

@Blind yup bike will definitely go in there and photos show split fold rear seats so with those down you won't even need to take the back wheel off, just get some cloths/old sheets to protect the car and/or a bag for the bike. I am a big VW / Audi fan, that car will cruise up and down the motorway/a roads all day long and be quiet and comfortable. It won't be a sports car but it will do it's job very well. I know there have been posts on here about the electric handbrake causing issues but we never had a problem with the one on our a6

That's exactly what I need. I have an Insignia at the moment and it's actually a really nice car for long drives. Quiet and very comfortable but it has had lots of mechanical issues. But its comp car so it doesn't really matter too much.

I've tested lots of options in the past week and the Insignia is still the best driver of the lot for my needs. So far the list is - Mazda 6, Volvo S60/V60, Skoda Superb, Seat Leon ST FR (this was great fun but too small)A4 Avant and the latest Insignia.

anyone got any views on the Passat 2.0 Bluemotion SE estate?

Been offered a 97k miler for £7.5k which seems a good price.
It's to replace the Freelander for Mrs Stoner to munch motorway miles for 2x45mins a day.

Realworld MPG?

With the rear seat up I couldn't get either road or mountain bike in the boot with the rear seat up. With the rear seat down I could get 2 bikes in the wheels removed. My bikes are large so maybe if you ride a small framed 26" wheeled bike you might just squeeze it in.

We can fit two bikes dismantled with wheels in the boot area of my Passat estate, with the blind pulled to hide them. The saloon and the estate having the same floor pan I'd say you could easily do it, assuming you can get the bike through the opening.

Mine is a 2.0 Tdi Bluemotion SE Estate with 55,000 miles on it and I'm getting 53 mpg overall, quite good considering I cane it during the weekly commute. It's not the most exciting car to drive but it has ample power for UK conditions, is quiet, comfortable, super-stable in the cruise thanks to the long wheelbase, has massive capacity (3 people + 3 bikes is easy and we've even had 4 + 4 when two were kids) and really gobbles up the miles with ease. Front tyre wear isn't too good at below 20,000 miles a set though.

There's a good reason why Passat B6 estates and saloons are taking over the minicab market; I guess the drivers appreciate the space as the legroom is huge. The Tdi engine in the B7 is a huge improvement on the Pd engine in the B6, much smoother, quieter and more flexible. My brother is a motor engineer in Detroit specialising in chassis and powertrain and on a recent visit to the UK he hired a Passat B6. He said he thought it was one of the best cars he had ever driven, with the best handling and balance of qualities for its type.

The only fault is that the engine makes an alarming bang if you stall it - possibly the dual-mass flywheel, and sometimes there's a sharp bang from the front suspension as the front wheels go down the far side of speed humps if you're going too fast, which I think may be axle tramp. Oh and in common with modern cars with water-based paints the lacquer is very soft. The uneven rear tyre wear problem of the B6 doesn't seem as acute on the B7 and my original rear tyres are only just starting to thrum after 55,000 miles. The AC isn't the most powerful but it does the job once you are moving and ramming air through the AC rad.

cheers gti, very useful.

my brother described the one he had for a few months as very quiet. That together with the mpg, space, comfort etc seems perfect for mrs stoner.

I've had the Passat for 2 weeks now and have put around 1100 miles on it. Its dull, quiet and boring but that is exactly what I need for trips of 200 miles plus in a day. It is very comfortable but I do miss my much maligned Insignia at times.

The computer is saying 51 mpg and I expect that will improve a little with mileage.
