Over the last 40 years (yea Gods, 40 years!!!) I’ve always camped with either a motorcycle or bike so used a series of small 1 man tents but as I mature I’m thinking as I now drive to camp I could buy a bigger tent with a porch (luxury). My question is having 1 person in a 3 man tent would it be significantly colder???

I use a 3 man tent for winter expeditions; yes, it's colder, but you can take more insulation very easily, and even a heater and electric hook up.

Ta. As this is a possible alternative to buying a camper and having to sell my current car (which I quite like) I could justify spending money on good camping gear (and a proper cup a soup water heater)...

If you're going in the car then you can carry enough gear to be warm in a 3person tent.

Room for a nice four season bag, a proper camp bed and a fleecy blanket in a car boot.

We find our "canvas" camp beds are more comfortable with a self inflating full length mat on top. They're the ones with the W shaped legs that hold them in tension and a pole along each side.

Decathlon Air-Seconds inflatable, ticks all the boxes. Big porch, big sleeping area, room to stand up in, (2 meter internal), I put mine up, with a footprint, from finding the spot to camp to sitting in the entrance watching others struggle in less than thirty minutes. I used a double-width 10 cm self-inflating mattress for extra plushness.
Photo was at its very first outing at Greenman Festival.

I have a huge 6-8 man lavvu tent I use in winter. It’s palatial for one. Depending on campsite I use a stove or electric hookup and fan heater. Blankets, animal fleeces on the floor, chair, bed table etc all inside. I have spent 200 plus nights in temperatures down to -12 in this set up.

Big tents are great in winter. If you have a car go huge!

Then buy a bigger car and then add a trailer for good measure. 😂

Different but linked.

After 30 years without one I bought a 4 season mountain tent during lockdown. Because...internet shopping.

I bought Alpkit's quasar knockoff. It's not light and HUGE inside in comparison to my other 1 man utlralights. Carrying it to solo camp will be a mission and not warm when I drag my sorry arse to wherever I'm camping. It strikes me in the foreseeable I'm not going to be able to con anyone into carrying half of it and stealing their body heat until this pesky covid bollox is gone away.

Seems a bit of a jump one man to 3 man for 1 man, so wouldn't......da da da.... A TWO man !! do better.

I mean something as the singleton I've considered but for the lack of a car, or the ability to drive it lol. But the 2 man size many come with quite a substantial porch.
It seems more 2's use the tent for longer camps, and they've increased porches height, length and width.

One maker I looked at a number of years ago for me and the mate was Hilleberg. Their tents seem set to accommodate climbers and people who use a lot of equipment, and a bigger porch was added. They are 1m high, where many are 1.4m, so a bit less airy. 1m is more than enough to sit upright in. The ones we loooked at werent mountain tents, just 3 season, but with warm kits as whatever.
Price wise, and that was 7 or so years back, about £700

Thanks chaps. I’m looking at a 3 man as I quite like the look of the Khyam, I had one of their one man tents back in my motorcycle days, it lasted years, was dead easy to put up / take down and if I hadn’t ruined its waterproofness by camping in the run off just before a storm caused a massive river to divert through my tent, it would probably still be going..

@flashes get yourself on the Khyam Facebook user group.

As a long time fan of Khyam we bought an 8 man air tent for longer whole family trips. It is a lovely space when up but we have had a couple of not insignificant issues with ours including a leaky air beam straight out of the box and a problem with the stitched in webbing storm guys / fast pitch straps. So far Khyam have been helpful but still waiting to hear on the issue with the guys.
