Does seem like a bit of an overreaction, but as the Post Office is liable for it's employees safety, and could potentially be sued were someone to sustain an injury that became infected, for example, then they just choose the simpler and cheaper option.
Equipping their posties with water pistols might actually be a more sensible solution however...
LOL , I got told about this kind of thing by one of the lads in the office about 5 years ago and couldn't believe it.
Then about 2 months ago I went into a garden and this black cat (spawn of the devil) came running at me hissing and growling , I honestly didn't know whether to run away but decided growling back at it was the best course of action. It hasn't taught it any lessons though cos it has a go every time it's out when I deliver the post.
we have real tigers in the woods here (sunny Viet Nam).
