I'm not sure whether a pot roast or short hot roast would be best having never cooked this joint before-any tips?

You mean rib-eye?
If so short roast. Put it in at 230, turn down to 180, 15-20mins per pound + 15-20mins over, depending on your pinkness liking. Rest well.
