Hi all,

I have a Macbook Pro, which I currently back up with Time Machine (quite a fan of TM after updating to El Capitan forced a wipe).

I'm running out of storage on the internal drive, so will start using another 1TB drive as extra storage. I want to use another 2TB drive as backup. Backing up the internal drive using TM to the 2TB drive is fine of course. I'm now trying to figure out the best way to back up the external 1TB drive.

I understand that to use TM to back up an external drive, the external drive has to be formatted to Mac OS Extendes which makes using with Windows a faff (unlikely to happen often but would like the option).

So otherwise, some other kind of back up method to get the 1TB files backed up on the 2TB TM backup drive - make a partition on the TM drive (is a partition actually necessary?), and either drag and drop files (not keen) or use something like Crash Plan to keep it updated.

I'd ideally like to backup everything using one method, but not keen on the Windows faff with backing up external drive with TM.

Any thoughts/recommendations?

Thanks! Duane.

Files to the cloud and make sure you have install media.

Are you saying you have more than 2 TB of data, or that the HD is full?

One of those scenarios is an easy option, the other is your question 😉

I'm not the most computer literate, however my Mac mini backs up to TM on a NAS connected to our router.

I have a 1TB drive in my Macbook, will use the 1TB external drive for extra storage, and therefore the 2TB drive for backup.

I have a WD mycloud NAS drive which is TM compatible, not the most sophisticated of NAS drives but works perfectly for my needs.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I will partition the 2TB drive into two 1TB volumes. Then use Time Machine to back up the internal MBP drive onto one volume, and drag and drop files from the 1TB external drive to the other volume.

As the 1TB external drive is just extra storage holding old photos etc, it shouldn't get used too much, so drag and drop is OK. And I can format it to a Window and Mac friendly format, so I can view the files on either sytstem without too much difficulty.

Does that sound reasonable?
