Currently all on an ageing pc, backed up to external hard drive. Only really used for storage and the odd photo manipulation. I use the iPad for browsing, playing music via an airplay speaker etc. was thinking a nas but then would need something to transfer files onto it, laptop ? Or is there a better solution?

Ultimately you would want something to store the photos that is Raided and then something off site.
I use a synology on site which has a nice photo app for the iPad and then backup to another synology offsite for the important stuff. If you get proper NAS drives just leave them cables to your router for best performance and do your off site backups late at night when you won't miss the bandwidth.
