As I will no longer be stopping at my favorite coffee shop en route to work, as the cute barista has moved away, I need to do the job myself. What is the best machine for my needs?

Gaggia classic gets my vote, mine has been going strong for 7 years now.
A decent burr grinder (keeps a consistent bean grind) and a good strong tamp gives great crema.
As for coffee I use happy donkey beans kept in a sealed jar in the fridge and grind as I need (keeps the oils in the bean fresh and damp)
