The blackheads
😆
The correct answer is...Velvet Underground.
Not my favourite group but they are the best band ever.
Based on those I still regularly listen to and in no particular order (except the first)
Any Zappa band (though ideally with Ray White and Ike Willis)
Pink Floyd!
Yes!!
Genesis!!!
Oh that's only 4.
OK, a different Zappa band with Ruth Underwood on percussion.
But although I don't listen to them as much, the Beatles, at the time, were astonishing. Whatever style they happened to be doing at the time.
James addiction (first 3 albums)
Smiths (everything)
Ride
Velvets
Spiritualised
So totally subjective, and really, an impossible thing to say, because, unless you have a really one-dimensional taste in music, ie you only listen to one particular band/artist, then changing taste and mood will alter what choices are made.
Personally, based on bands I've actually seen, and whose music I loved from first hearing, then:
Led Zeppelin
Arcade Fire
Talking Heads
Fleetwood Mac
Elbow
Goldfrapp
Of course, there are loads of really great bands who I love, but it would be difficult to justify labelling them as best band ever, bands like
The Drink
Howling Bells
Belly
Lush
Dinosaur Jr
Metric...
All of whom I've seen, whose music I really adore, but I find it really difficult to elevate any to 'best band ever'.
Arcade Fire may well be, at least for me, possibly the best, their music is beautifully written, played and performed, is intelligent, epic in scope, but their live performances are on a level above pretty much anything I've ever seen by anyone else.
With the singular exception of Kate Bush, but she's really a solo artist.
The one's that have been mentioned which I fully agree with;
Janes Addiction
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath
RATM
Pink Floyd.
Haven't read the whole thread but I didn't see these mentioned;
Aerosmith
Guns n Roses
Are Daft Punk a band?? I would have thought them/it would be classed as a DJ.

They are indeed a brilliant band. Their first album is one I still regularly play and the other three are all great in their own way.
GNR (pre Chinese Democracy)
Velvet Revolver
Deftones
Incubus
Magnum
8)
Round 2
Pavement
The clash
Tube-way army
Belle and Sebastian
Pixies
James
Doves
Big Country
New Order
Rolling Stones
Yawm allwrong, it's LedZep lyke ey syd ealyer..

Rancid
Stiff Little Fingers
Metallica
I took it as they were just getting on with it, firing them out without any messing.
I didn't see much either though, ended up down the front and was thrown around like a rag doll for most of it...
Well I'm very pleased someone enjoyed it more than I did!
Chuffed to see The Beta Band have several mentions.
Abba
Velvet Underground
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Rolling Stones
Butthole Surfers
Abba
Velvet Underground
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Rolling Stones
Butthole Surfers
Aagh, I meant to include Led Zep and forgot!
Led Zep 1-4 are amazing.
I saw them in about 76. Robert Plant had laryngitis but it didn't stop a brilliant show.
I feel a related thread coming on.
Best band ever?
If you must know ...

ABBA
Bee Gees
Blondie
I am stuck after three bands above coz I have no impression of other bands ... can't think of any others.
Okay perhaps Fleetwood Mac, coz I can't think of any others ... tbh I can't remember any of their song title but I can recognise their sound. 😆
arrghh ... trying hard to think ... how about Carpenters ... are they a band? Yes? No? I know they are the best of the best. All brilliant songs.
The only one I will gladly pay to watch is Carpenters but she is dead.

The blackheads (especially when Ian Dury was around)
.............
I really can't understand what so many people see in the smiths or anything about Neil morrissey, he's so depressing!
Post of the week, either brilliant or stupid, can't decide. Anyway, I guess Morrissey must have taken time out from his musical misery to do Men Behaving Badly.
Much more love for Black Sabbath than I expected.
Black Sabbath ( Ozzy and Dio era's)
Qotsa
Led zeppelin
James Brown (not technically a band but are you gonna argue with him)
Cream.
Santana (early)
The Blue Nile
Best band?
The Band.
This is the hardest question ever
Cream
REM
Led Zep
Anything with Chris Cornell in it
Fleetwood Mac
And that is missing out loads of truly great bands.
Good call for The Kinks, huge contribution made by them.
Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars ( best name as well)
Tool
Oceansize
Rage Against the Machine
Pantera (even though Phil is a knob)
Deftones
Too many others to name.
amenra
oathbreaker
sleep
ween
I'm going to ad in Killswitch Engage.
Amazed at so many Black Sabbath fans, thought it was only old folk who enjoyed them. 😉
The Carter Family
The Ramones
The Rolling Stones
Howling Wolfs band (with Hubert Sumlin)
The Dead C
Yep, I that was meant to be The Blockheads!
Okay I just listened to Fleetwood Mac again but I want to change my mind coz I only enjoyed a few of their songs.
Nope, I don't like them ...
Fleetwood Mac is now officially Out of my list.
Bread to replace Fleetwood Mac... The band called Bread is much better as I have almost forgotten them.
Really tough question as I also have a 6-10:
Prodigy
New Order
the 'Mode
Dubliners
Pogues
Hawkwind was a good call,
Grateful dead should be in there.
Sex Pistols
Buzzcocks
The Fall
Cooper Temple Clause
Mando Diao
Angelic Upstarts
Oasis
Inspiral Carpets
Public Image Ltd
Ultrasound
you could listen to the grateful dead live forever and not hear the same version of the same song twice, amazing musicians.
Travelling Wilburys.
Was going to say the Stooges as they were original hard-rocking punk forefathers. Then I thought about who the Stooges supported. It was the MC5. 1968 ffs! They wrote the book and then burned it. Punk was another 10 years catching up. But MC5 had a lot more going on than what was to become punk. They arguably invented hard rock, proto-punk and metal and then smashed the whole thing into a wall of Marshalls before being literally arrested for disturbing the peace. Changing music forever. And I was 30 before I'd even heard of them. That was the real crime because if I'd (and millions of other snotty kids) had heard them at 15 I'd never have ended up playing in such shit bands.
Best Band Ever:
MC5
KOTJMF!
Ye Godz, has no one mentioned the Ramones or Can yet? FFS...
Best gig for me was Dinosaur Jr so I'll let let one stand.
Velvets, yup
For my last I was going to add Merle Haggard & the Strangers but when I think about it the most influential band on me as a person has to be these ****ers:
Mannfred Mann
Black Sabbath (first 6 albums)
The Who
Pink Floyd
Funkadelic
Hey Metalheart. I picked the Ramones. Great, great, great,great.....I had The Carter Family over Merle though. Even darker visions of a world of death, murder and mystery. Great choices otherwise!
AC/DC with Bon Scott
Rolling Stones
Stone Roses
REM
Sonic Youth
Pearl Jam
Silverchair
Lifehouse
Bon Iver
