I am over in holland at the moment and when I walked onto the hotel balcony there was a big red butterfly with 'eyes' on it's wings. It looked really vibrant and lovely. First one I have noticed this year.
anyone else seen / photos of butterflies?
Any idea why they are butterflies rather than flutterbys?
It was like that top one but redder
Closer but from memory the eyes were only on the front wings like on the top picture. could just have been a fresh one, not sure when they hatch

These are my favourites 'Chalkhill Blues' but only down south they don't like the cold so only ever seen them when I've been down on the south coast. Wildflower gardens and nettles are good for getting them in your garden (the other ones I mean the Peacocks)
We saw a peacock yesterday - I had forgotten how beautiful butterflies are
Don't what type it is. From Italy last year

There was a butterfly event at RHS Wisley last month - they had a load of gert big tropical types in the glasshouse there. Shame I didn't manage to get a shot of the first one with its wings open - it had amazing iridescent blue colours inside. There were some that had almost transparent wings too, except for a white bar at the top & bottom - looked most odd when it was flying.
I remember being guided above Prades in the Pyrenees when we came across an 'Alpine' meadow. It appeared to be covered in white flowers which in itself was rather pretty. However when we rode into the meadow the whole white carpet took to the wing. They werent flowers but thousands of butterflies.
What is the collective noun for Butterflies?
A flutter of butterflies?
Its a 'rabble' of butterflies which I don't think suits them does it? ๐
I think that my suggestion is better
