So why do some fellow mountain bikers feel the need to have a rather ridiculous beard ? I could understand if it improved performance or carried some kind of street cred. I am really finding it difficult to comprehend having such a monstrosity hanging off your chin.

I just don't get how you can all spend so much time shaving. Or are you just one of those who is jealous as you can't make the bits of fluff join up?

I thought beards were back in fashion for young folk.

Mine grew in after I had a incredibly rugged crash on my bike, which stopped me from shaving for a bit, and then my wife refused to let me shave it off because it makes me look so manly and virile. It covers up the facial scarring pretty well too. The only drawback is the hordes of beautiful women who gather when I go out in public, that can get a bit tiresome.

Also my mother-in-law hates it.

Helmet obscures hairstyle (or lack of) so have a new hairstyle on your face...

Last nights Monday Night Pub Ride played host to one of the most impressively robust arrangements of facial fungus I've ever witnessed

Personally, if I could grow something like that*, I'd accessorise it by dressing like a pirate. AAAARRRRRRRRR!!!!

* I'm not allowed. And anyway, I'd just look like I had put my head on upside down

Grow a really bushy beard and you'll look like the evil soviet cyclist from American Flyers.

Mine's somewhat of a necessary evil, I'm a big chap with a large, spud-like head and started going bald when I was 22.

I therefore have 3 options.

A: Retain what hair I have and look like a pasty klingon.
B: Clipper the hair and look like a BNP supporter who's lost his bomber jacket.
C: Clipper hair but offset with beard to avoid BNP look.

Option C please.

What comes around, goes around. When I were a student in the 70s, almost all the blokes in my climbing circle had beards. It was part of the uniform I guess along with items of climbing attire worn casually around college.

There are certainly a lot of big woolly beards around at the moment; I reckon it's inspired by some of the magnificent specimens we see our Muslim friends sporting around town and the realisation that it can look quite handsome and manly.

And the midges off in summer.

Really the only downside is all the attention from women who prefer men to boys... ๐Ÿ™‚

+1 but I do look scruffy with a beard so just get the clippers out once a week or so. Let if grow a bit more in winter for the insulation.

I've never understood shaving.
You've got hair over most of your body, some long, some not so long, so why shave off just some of it ?
Why not all of it, or none of it ?
What's so special about the bit on your chin ?

why cut your hair? Why don't we all have ponytails and beards down to our knees?

See also ladies underarms, bikini lines etc. Societal norms and personal preference innit?

In my foolish youth, I tried to grow a moustache. One of my older brother's work colleagues commented on its distinct lack of body and overall coverage and added...

"...besides, what makes you think your nose is so important you have to underline it?"

I had no comeback...

Shaving's an unnatural act so it's ones who shave who are the weirdos.

This ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Being blonde doesn't help though (it's my excuse and i'm sticking to it!). If i do try to grow a beard it takes a couple weeks before you can see owt, then it hardly grows on my cheeks so i get a chin beard with a crappy 'tasche. There are Italian lasses that can grow a thicker 'tasche than me.

I have a fine 1/8" beard, barely more than stubble, and equal in length to my hair.

It improves my attractiveness by giving the illusion of a jawline and chin. Unexpectedly, the affectation seems to be working !!

I had to present my driving license at the driving driving school my son goes to, the photo dates from when my beard was fuller and not grey, on seeing it he spontaneously laughed and called me a Norseman. This perhaps explains why children used to hide behind their mothers at the time.

Because hair are your antennae, and the rest of me is pretty much balded. It's also a nice light grey, which makes a change from the rusty colour of it's youthful incarnations. i think that's about all, apart from making me look less like a skinhead...
