We are planning a road trip for over the xmas period. Thinking of going to the Bavarian alps in Germany for a few days then spending NYE in Munich. Will do some snowboarding if the snow is good but otherwise just do a bit of walking/sightseeing etc. Trying to keep it fairly cheap with airbnb etc seems possible.
Just wondering if anyone has any tips or places to not miss/avoid? Been to Austria quite a bit before so I imagine it will be fairly similar in terms of culture/food etc, i.e. entertainingly backward and redneck and not too expensive. 🙂
Seen cheap places to stay in Rettenburg, Halblech or Obsteig in Austria, if anyone knows any of them.

Garmisch and Zugspitze aren't bad for a few days skiing/boarding (Zugspitze can be very cold but quite scenic). I think they have a big ski jump event on NY's day so check its not going to be over busy. We did some skiing in a small resort about 40 mins from Chimesee also. You also have the "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" castle, worth a vist and again all very scenic around there, I imagine the hiking might be good.
Cheers for that. Will probably be nursing a hangover in Munich on NYD. Don't think we'll do more than 2-3 days boarding (and only if the snow is half decent) probably so it sounds like there will be enough. Was looking at the Ehrwald area in Austria too. Edit: Ah I see that is Zugspitze
Not sure what hiking will be possible but I'm sure there will be low level stuff. We have spikes/crampons but no snow shoes. Is that Neuschwanstein castle? Yeah I quite like a good castle. 🙂
Yes Neuschw... You could so some research but I am sure there is walking around there that won't need spikes etc, much lower level. I have a soft spot for Garmisch, some decent runs/bars but does need the conditions as it's quite low.
