Hi,

Looking for a recommendation for a running backpack for commuting. I won't be doing mega distances - typically 3-5k, max 10k - but will need to transport a 15" MacBook Pro on some occasions along side the usual jeans, t-shirt, sweater, sneakers and wash kit.

Cheers!

Hmmm, that's a lot of kit to have for running. I've used a Camelbak Havoc (I think) for this and it kinda worked, but laptops bounce around a fair bit.

Something with a good waist and chest band would work, probably with good back ventilation too; a smaller Osprey Talon or a Saloman something?

Anything small. I think mine is 16litres but I never fill it that much. Most important is waists and chest strap and the ability to cinch it all up so it doesn't flap around. I don't run particularly fast and there ain't no parcour involved but it seems to work. Without the two straps it flops around a bit too much for me to be comfortable

I once snapped a laptop's motherboard running with it in a bag. Avoid if you can!

I’m tempted to suggest a Kriega backpack. They are intended for motor biking duties but the weird way they clip together across your chest really holds everything in place. Whatever is the smallest version that will fir q 15” MacBook.

I realised the other day I'd gone home in my steel toe caps so put them in my bag in the morning to run to work with. Put bag on back and thought bugger running 5.5k with 500ft of up with that on my back so drove in. Can't think that running with a laptop is much fun. I have clothes at work from the days I drive in and just carry my lunch each day - even some of that gets taken in when I drive in and kept in the fridge.

I actually use my Wingnut 2.5 to run in which works quite well for a small amount of stuff.

Laptop?

Shirley it’s iPad these days ?

I use my camelbak mule (the one with the water in a bladder low down on the hips, then fill the rear compartment with iPad, phone, undies, socks and alternate running either day so I can change shirts..

I have been looking at one of these from Decathlon.

They also come in a 27l size.

Similar thread the other day - Osprey Talon. I've numerous lightweight backpacks - the problem with the really ultralight ultramarathon stuff is that they're not very durable, in comparison I have an original, 16 year old Deuter Race-X still going strong.

My top tip ... although I've never had to transport a laptop... is cross both the shoulder straps over your head.

Makes it nice and tight and brings the sack high up your back to stop it bouncing about.

Good luck

Macbook is light as especially if you can leave charger at work / home, get a good cover sleeve that protects it well and choose a bag that allows you to put it in the compartment that the hydration bladder normally takes up.

Get one that just fits as the bigger the bag the more likely you are to fill it. Try to leave as much as you can at work, wash bag, jeans shoes etc. All you should need is clean jocks, socks & t-shirt. I use a Vaude but any cycling or walking hydration pack should be fine.

I used to run with a £20 Karrimor one from sports direct .. one of those formless things if that makes any sense, in a very hi viz / relective colour. Worked just fine for years.
Wrapped my macbook up in a fleece, it was fine if not bouncing too much.
