Went yesterday morning carrying struggling 4 month old and chair up the stairs... Sharp pain below the shoulder, into diaphragm like I'm winded, felt sick, short of breathe and doubled over. Spent the day trying to rest it, as much as you can with a baby, lots of ibuprofen. Wife helped with a little massage, muscles on one side are solid. Helped but this morning it is just as bad can't sit up and had to roll out of bed.

My guess is a pinched nerve, it hurts alot What to do? Get booked in for a physio session ASAP? Stop moving? Keep moving? Etc?

A lot of Hospital Trusts allow you to self refer these days, which means you can phone them up directly and get a physio appointment without having to go through your GP. To find out if your Trust does this look them up online.

Physio, and keep moving - walking will help (IME - not a doctor)!

Careful with the Ibuprofen. I took loads (within recommended dosage) when my back went about 4 years ago. Eased my back but screwed my stomach up, which still isn't right now.

If there are no neuropathic symptoms like numbness or tingling in your legs it's more likely to be a simple muscle spasm caused by an unaccustomed movement. See a physio for a proper diagnosis and treatment. You can find them in Yellow Pages.

Stick some heat on it and take whatever drugs you get along with.

did my back in swimming and after 4 weeks I can lift my leg without pain. I used ho****er bottle on my back and a paramol ( available over the counter) when it was bad. Also used deep heat patches which were mildly pleasant, ibuprofen gel, Tokusen plasters ( nice and warm and smells lovely) . Hope it gets better soon.

If it only happened a day or so ago then I feel this is too early to be seeking medical help - A couple of months ago I 'did my back in' from using kettle bells - The pain was gnarly - couldn't stand up for about 3 days - then it eased but only a little - Right now about six months later back is great .. General tips for back strength - Avoiding soft furnishings as these encourage slouching - Also if you have too much gut on you this will often cause terrible posture .. If Mrs is giving massage this is great ..

I don't agree about to early to seek medical advice. Go see a physio as soon as possible. I know money doesn't grow on trees but pay and get there as soon as possible. It might only take 1 or 2 appointments with a good Physio at around £35 per session. As a general rule I have been told the longer you leave it the longer it takes to treat it when you finally give in and seek medical advice as your body has got used to compensating for the damaged area.

As a back pain sufferer for a couple of years now I'd just like to echo a couple of the comments above.

See a Physio sooner rather than later - I left it too long and was doing the wrong things for my back and making it worse.

Don't use Ibuprofen for a long time (weeks) as it can mess up your stomach and leave you with a sensitivity to NSAIDs so you can't ever use them again. My doctor never mentioned this (apparently common) side effect to me until I rocked up at the emergency department one night throwing up tar-like half digested blood!

Usual caveat's apply - I'm not a doctor, and only talking from personal experience.

Go see GP then get a massage from a specialist.

If it's only just gone, a physio may not be able to fix it properly. Last time mine went I got seen the next day but he couldn't do all he needed to do because of the pain, had to go back 3-4 days later for a further session.

Lucky mine hasn't gone since. Nothing beats the feeling of having to crawl to the toilet and then trying to figure out how you get up on to it....
