I'm trying to write a Tripadvisor review of a cottage we stayed in last week (Bell Ringers Cottage in Llandegla, it's ace btw),but I can't submit it because it keeps on saying it contains profanity.

At first I thought it might be because I mentioned the bird feeder (most of the visitors were blue tits and great tits), so I edited that out. Still no joy, my review is still secretly sweary. Then I thought, "A HA! It's because I've mentioned the nearby proximity of Offa's Dyke footpath. So I edited that out, still no joy.

I don't mind TripAdvisor having a word filter, it's their site and their rules, but as a user it'd be nice if it actually pointed out what words it objected when I tried to submit (and even nicer if it had any concept of context, although Mr Toast did raise his eyebrows when I proclaimed, "I've edited out the tits and the Dyke and it still complains!")

Aaand that's my first world problem of the day.

I'm surprised you managed to get "Llandegla" through the STW swearbot - you know what thats slang for don't you - expect the banhammer!

it'd be nice if it actually pointed out what words it objected when I tried to submit

I always thought that when the nice Simon Bates would warn us at the beginning of a rented VHS that the film I was about to watch contained sexual swear word that he should first list the ones in this film then reassure us further with a full list of the words not in the film also

It is actually known as "The S****horpe Problem" 😀

And bad attempts at substitute filtering are known as a "Clbuttic Mistake"

(my favourite being when a news site run by the American Family Association automatically renamed sprinter Tyson Gay as "Tyson Homosexual" 😀 )

"The word "ass" may be replaced by "butt", resulting in "clbuttic" for "classic" and "buttbuttinate" for "assassinate""

Ace, in WoW I play a buttbuttination rogue! 😀

I got bitten by a S****horpe problem on an email server a little while ago, anti-spam measures flagging a huge number of false positives.

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, it turned out to be objecting to the word "specialist," due to it containing 'cialis' which is some sort of Viagra substitute, apparently.

Clitheroe also falls foul of the occasional 'S****horpe' effect.

The real S****horpe Problem is when you have to explain to your elderly mother why some of her emails keep bouncing.

One of the more awkward conversations I've had with her, especially as she's a bit hard of hearing 🙂

The wiki on the s****horpe effect contains the following section:

Origin and historyThe problem was named after an incident in 1996 in which AOL's dirty-word filter prevented residents of the town of S****horpe, North Lincolnshire, England from creating accounts with AOL, because the town's name contains the substring ****.[1] Years later, Google's filters apparently made the same mistake, preventing residents from searching for local businesses that included S****horpe in their names.[2]

Residents of Penistone, South Yorkshire, experienced problems because the town's name includes the substring penis.
Ligh****er in Surrey suffered similarly because its name contains the substring ****.
Residents of Clitheroe (Lancashire, England) have been repeatedly inconvenienced because their town's name includes the substring clit, which (among other meanings) is short for "clitoris".

This article needs more examples.

Edit: Pasting this article is also a good case study for the words that are allowed on STW.

I frequently see job adverts and emails that shorten "Analyst" or "Analysis" to the first 4 letters 😀
Funnily enough some web filters don't approve of that abbreviation.
