8 on the autism one, surprised it was that many really, however it think its because I find it funny to be offensive sometimes, that put my score up.
Cool - am borderline ADD though, must work harder on that

Is that ADHD thing genuine?? Because I got this:

blah blah blah

And now I'm slightly concerned....

I wouldn't worry too much. Those questionnaires aren't all that useful really; you'd also need trained and experienced medial professionals to carry out far more extensive investigation into your particular case, and consider you as an individual. These type of questionnaire things can be a guide, but they can also be misleading. Always best to seek the advice from a proper doctor, than place too much faith in an online questionnaire.

I feel obliged, now that I've only scored 14 in the autism test.

Will I have to talk to you ? 😕

Well, you might not get a word in edgeways, according to one of the tests. I can't remember which one though; short attention span, you see.

Some of the autism questions can also be answered by the socially inept so I wouldnt draw too much into the results 😉

27. some questions somewhat unclear and I didn't disagree strongly with any of them. I don't like big parties but I don like meeting new people in smaller groups and so on. There is some Aspergers in my extended family though so not a real surprise I'm scoring quite highly.

Has anyone ever suggested that you're autistic aracer ?

Actually Southern Yeti, short attention spam, frustration, and a lack of patience towards the job in hand, are all symptoms of autism. Even though paradoxically, so are attention to detail and an obsessive commitment to a special interest. Well at least those are all characteristics which I recognise from my severely autistic nephew.

33 - no surprise to my wife who reckons she's trained me out of having a potentially higher score.

What's to do with the question about hearing small sounds that no-one else hears? My kids reckon I have dog ears because I can hear things they can't.

Only 18 on the autism thing despite being a bloke who works in IT. Must be why they used to let me talk to the customers sometimes...

42 on the ADD one though, so probably only talking to customers 'cos I couldn't concentrate long enough to finish my other work 😉

Not the first dad of an autistic son to post on here tonight and so far nothing to upset me but had I read this 6 years ago i would have got angry and upset with some of your post's. It can be challenging living with autism in the family and it does change your life but would I want to stop my son being autistic I don't know, I would love for him to hold a conversation and him tell me his wants, desires and needs but strip him of his autism would be taking away the boy that I love so much. I hope some people will now take the time to fully understand how this disability can affect lives and be supportive and understanding. Please dont stop posting.

Isn't this all a bit reductio ad autism though (ie it's suggesting that you're in some way autistic because you exhibit some of the symptoms of people who are)? Can you really be a little bit autistic?

I don't think most people have meant to be insensitive, and I'm sure some of us will gain more understanding or Autism from this experience. I appreciate the light-hearted manner in which most of us has approached it may seem a little blasé of what is a very serious issue for some people, may not appear entirely appropriate, but I don't think anyone intended to offend.

I think this thread has opened up the subject of Autism to many STWers, and can be a positive learning experience for all of us.

Can you really be a little bit autistic?

-Yes, you can, its a spectrum and you can have lots of the characteristics in large amounts down to just a few in small amounts. There are more males diagnosed as Autistic, this could be due to the fact that it affects more males, or that males have more autistic tendancies normally than women making it harder to diagnose in females as they exhibit less of the characteristics normallt anyway.

Autism scale score = 6

Personality type: "Extrovert Intuitive Feeler Perceiving"
ENFP

... which I think is the same as Talkemada ... in which case we'd better never meet up ... or maybe we'd just get on perfectly in a overly talkative, understanding, slightly too senstive kinda way 🙂

LOL 🙂

Thanks, that's sorted out the 'life plan' for now (although as an ENFP I believe I have a tendancy to over-plan, procrastinate, and otherwise d*ck around for far too long before ever coming to a decision about anything!)

34 here. Not really that surprising though. Plus I'm super OCD about weird stuff like the way stuff gets hung to dry on the rack.

I think it was jPod that I read in which one of the charaters theorises that most people in IT are mildy autistic and I definately have to agree (coming from someone in IT).

Quick thing...Rain man, or the person the book was based upon isn't autistic, actually had a birth complication and the results were similar to autism, but not. Just so you know. Accuracy is everything Eh?

My son is Autistic, and I spend my time watching the channel four show, Autistic and stage struck, wondering which of the 12 kids are most like my son. Actually, I see parts of his traits in almost all of them. Very emotional to watch the show, and see them respond so well to such a fabulous group activity. Hope springs eternal and all that...

25 in autism test, 56 in adhd, too make it worse the personality test called me a ****er, Im infp - introvert intuitive feeler perceiving 😕 🙂 always assumed I had ocd or ocpd so not really a suprise.

Do people go and get an exact diagnosis or are people happy being on the 'autistic spectrum' and leave it at that?

16 for me on the ASD.

24 on the ADD test, which will surprise those that refer to me as ADHD ... but then my internet persona can become a caffeine-fueled maniac ...

male "one task at a time please" stereotype.

Apparently thats a myth or multi-tasking is, nobody can do two things at once we just switch between tasks, & women are just quicker at switching to from tasks than men.

29. though I can't help but think that's based entirely on the fact that I prefer my own company... which is backed up by the 'personality test' result: Introvert-Intuitive-Thinking-Judicious.

It can be challenging living with autism in the family and it does change your life but would I want to stop my son being autistic I don't know, I would love for him to hold a conversation and him tell me his wants, desires and needs but strip him of his autism would be taking away the boy that I love so much

Yep, I can understand that. Part of what my autistic nephew's identity was his autism, and he was a truly interesting and lovable kid. You could hold a conversation with him (not always easy though) so not as severe as your boy. He never ceased to amaze people with his detailed knowledge of stuff, even at a very young age.

He also had a wicked sense of humour, which when combined with his autism, made him really entertaining. His greatest obsession was 'weather and climate' and if he was being told off, he would re-enact a storm making the sounds of rumbling thunder and then sudden thunderbolts ! Other things he would do if an adult was telling him off and shouting, was to make the sound of a cat fighting and then say, "now look what you've done - you've upset the cat !" which made it very hard to keep a straight face and still be angry 😀

On the down side though ........serious down side, was the obvious frustration and distress he clearly felt when he was unable to socially interact in the same way as "normal" people. Although a big part of the problem was very much all the people around him, who simply didn't know how to deal with autism. He must have felt very lonely at times 😐

That was all a very long time ago. After many years of getting nowhere and his autism not being dealt properly by anyone, he was eventually sent to a local authority run special boarding school for autistic children. And after years of hard work and dedication by the staff there, his life was completely turned around.

Today he has a job (something to do with weather forecasting !) and is happily married to a really lovely girl. I saw him recently at my mother's birthday party (which was a big event in a public hall) and he has all the social skills anyone could possibly want. Anyone who didn't know him wouldn't have known that he is autistic. In fact, I now find him just as boring to talk to, as everyone else at a party 😀

Not sure why I've ended up with this long rambling post.......I guess it's cause I reckon it's a nice story. Plus this story is the greatest tribute to the education profession, that I am personally aware of 8)

I can get very anal about organising things, remember phone numbers from years back, remember car reg numbers, aren't good at social situations so I get p155ed and then enjoy it a whole lot more, and can talk endlessly about bike things boring those around me to certain death.

I think i may be slightly autistic

I suppose I have an excuse for being annoying now then.

Nice post Ernie.

I scored 4 on the autism test, and so far haven't been bothered to do the ADD or personality ones (I want to go to bed). But, having a tiny bit of a priori knowledge (I took a course in social psychology at university - albeit 15 years ago - and remeber one or two bits about the autism spectrum), so the questions were easy to spot. In other words I passed the false belief test.

As for the comments about being OCD, please - if you had or knew anyone suffering from OCD you wouldn't make so light of it....
