MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
So I’m doing Ironman Austria next Sunday in Klagenfurt (southern Austria). We’ve got a chalet there until the Tuesday morning, then a tunnel booked home the following Saturday. In between all I want to do is eat and sleep and read a book.
My wife however would like to go swimming in some nice lakes, and do some running on some trails.
Where would Singletrack stay between Klagenfurt and Calais to fulfill the above and break up the loooong drive??
Well you will need to buy a 10 day Austrian Motorway Toll sticker at the very least so you might as well spend some time there. There is a beautiful lake for swimming and relaxing on the Fernpass, known as the Blindsee, but you need to pay to drive down to it (worth it though) unless you go in the evening.

This pass will lead you over to Schloss Neuschwanstein which would be a worthy (though very touristy) place to visit. I am sure there is a website listing all the best "Badeseen" in southern Germany (lots of them). Something like this
Head up to the Millstatter See and go into the mountains to Bad Kleinkircheim. It's a summer resort with thermal pools, lifts and no through traffic (one road in, same road out).
Otherwise further up into Salzkammergut or Dobriach on the aforementioned Millstatter See are both good.
You’ll be driving past Chiemsee in Bavaria. Lovely part of the world with lots to do and the Alps as a backdrop. There is also a way marked trail all around the lake for walking or cycling and the area itself is relatively flat but you are only 10 km away from the mountains with a cable car taking you up to the top of Kampenwand where you get a stunning view of the lake.
We have a place in Maria Alm near Zell Am See.
Lakes, great walking trails, Lido, lots for families.
Here’s my website, there’s a bit of info about the area there. I’m not trying to sell my place, think I’ll probably be there for the time period your talking about. Have a google on Zell Am See, Saalbach and Maria Alm
Could you split your plan? The lakes in Kärnten/Carinthia are lovely and ideal for swimming in and very close to Klagenfurt. Then move to the Black Forest for trail running.
Kochel Am See, just to the north of Garmish. Truly terrible place to hang out, watch the world go by.
I quite liked Lake Constanz. I spent a bit of time in St Gallen (Switzerland) a few years ago and the area is stunning.
