Starting to think about getting this done. Where do you start? Does any one have any advice. I think it should be fairly straightforward, I would say at least half the houses in our street have had theirs done and we won't want anything fancy or out of the ordinary doing, just looking for some advice really. Oh we live in Scotland if that is relevant regarding planning laws.
I'd phone up Planning and Building Control just for a chat or get some loft conversion companies in to talk you through it.....
As footflaps said, I had mine converted 18 months ago and got building control involved as well as input from an architect pal who designed and specified the works, it pays off in the end believe me
Ask one or two of the neighbours if you can have a look at theirs. Also ask them what builder/conversion company they used for recommendations.
Great, those were along the lines of what we were thinking. An architect friend has done a fairly detailed sketch of what we were thinking of doing but we also know an architect that lives up the road and has had theirs done so def. looking to go visit them.
Thinking of doing this as well..... I found this link which is quite good as it provides a blow-by-blow account of the method and madness of one chaps DIY effort.

My architect pal who designed the job gave me detailed plans and a specification.
It included what type of board, fire stops , fire doors and a whole lot more.
It cost me £250.00 for local council building control and £400.00 for my specification and drawings, it was money well spent (apart from the council a$$ h*oles who caused more trouble than they were worth)
