Happened to me the other day and for some reason I'd been signed out of my Google account, signed back in and they were there again. You've probably tried that though.

has your bookmarks bar disappeared or just the bookmarks from it? If the former just click on "Show bookmarks bar"
Can you try a different device - say an android phone and see if its still sync'd there?
Have you tried logging in on another computer running chrome?
The next step is someone tries to ingratiate themselves into your circle of friends and tries to sleep with you..be careful
Email GCHQ and ask them to send you a copy from their archive.

i uninstalled /re-installed then logged back into google. that worked
Curses - reinstall didn't help.
