Assuming you're not at a 10, what are you going to do to get it back.?

Yep, happens most years at Spring though.
3x rides a week, low-fat, high protein diet, walk a few K each lunch break is pretty much what I’ve got time for.
No 🙁 I might take up swimming and try to get fit doing that as that's possible but I'll never get faster/have more endurance on a bike, not until they cure MS anyway 🙂
Cue montage....
Can feel the fitness coming back cycling to work and putting in a couple of efforts on the climbsand am getting 1-2 off road hour jaunts a week in too, but will struggle to get the longer rides in now with a new house to do up and the kids. Might never get back to as fit as I was. So I'm going to try eating some cheese and salami and have a glass of wine, see how that pans out....
Joined gym to do circuit training, boxing and core fitness. Get out on the bike more. Try really hard not to eat cake (this is the hardest bit) and maybe do some running
I need to lose 6kg for a start.
Im doing little about it!
I really hope so! 24hr World Champs in Fort William in October, baby born last week. Hmm... Might be more a case of slowing the decline as best I can. New coach so hopefully training better but less.
Just riding a bit more will get me back to my weekend warrior PLUS status
Now up to ~78Kg, so I need to start being ruthless about how much high Calorie snacking I'm doing, to try and lose 4+Kg over the summer. If I can keep my power (~300W up cat3/4 climbs under 20mins duration) at the same time, I will be knocking on the door for 4W/Kg, which will be nice.
Plus start doing some regular 4000+ feet of climbing rides, which means linking up 6+ cat3/4s, instead of just the ~three per ride I've been doing over the last month.
I'm beginning to feel a bit quicker again......kids getting that bit older helps, plus absence from MTB makes the heart grow fonder. Less running, more cycling this summer.
Nope, mileage up and enjoying my riding but not seeming to get any fitter. Totally spent after 4 days riding last weekend, so taken this week off to hopefully recover.
Once I win the mental battle I will.
I am unhappy with myself now and want to change. Struggling to start again.
Currently injured which is an easy excuse to do nothing.
Yup. Been riding as much as practicable, not as much as I'd like as there's been a lot of driving for work.
Got two months of intermittent work in the Manchester area starting next week. Rather than over indulge in takeaways and hotel breakfasts like last time I'm planning to treat it like a mini training camp. Won't get much chance to do real riding as they hours don't suit it but have bought some resistance rollers for hotel room zwifting. And will make a concerted effort to get out and find some hills on my days off.
Hard winte4 of illness followed by a very wet start to the year means less miles and more booze and food than normal.
about 2kg over my normal so starting 1000 mile months and 200 press-ups / 160 chin ups per day.
All going well well so far.
Yeah, why not. I’m glad of the opportunity to get out and run when I want to, surf when I want to and hitting the trails running is fabulous.
I will never ever, not ina million years, get back to the fitness I once had years ago, but I’m not bad at 52 and I feel absolutely fine with what I’m doing and how I’m going about it. Some days are good, some are awful, some I feel on top of the world happy and others feel like my legs are pulling through soft sand.
But, this is the thing for me... I’m happy doing what I do. I really enjoy trail running, I have no major goals other than improving my enjoyment of it.. and that’s it. It’s such a relief to be running for the enjoyment and fun without some training regime in place (which for me is a complete change of outlook)
Fitness is a by product of my enjoyment of running.
Been trying. Thought about 10UTB but I ended up psyching myself out.
Signed up for GT7, hopefully that will be a kick up the arse in 2 weeks for the Correiarrack Challenge 6 weeks later (shit!)
I had a goal for a sub 3hr marathon this year too...
160 chin ups per day
I did four on the monkey bars in the park this afternoon. From tiny acorns.....
Fix the injuries - have physio once a week and lots of exercises every day. Then get back on the bike and ramp it up again. That's the plan anyway.
Nah. Just gonna buy an e-bike.
Yes. Been absolutely hammered at work, but Ramadan starts this week meaning my hours are going to be 8am-1pm full stop.
7 weeks of smashing the fitness. Aiming to lift every day and so will definitely be fitter in a months time!
Then 9 weeks school holidays it may trough again somewhat....
Struggling with the motivation to get back to my old level.
But I think I enjoy my riding more than when I was fitter and doing some racing so not all bad.
I still ride about 500 plus a month just not flat out everywhere anymore
Yep,
Lots of little things applied individually then reinforced until they become normal.
Yep. I'm no athlete and never will be, but got a bit caught up in the 'must ride further/faster/harder' thing and totally ruined my enjoyment of cycling a couple of years back. Mrs Pondo is doing London Brighton this year so we've spent a bit of time cycling these last few weeks, and it's been brilliant. Totally gonna ride more this year, but only for pleasure.
Cherry juice. That's my plan. Concentrated tart cherry juice.
I've bought another two training books too. If that doesn't work, I'm stumped.
I always say I'm going to get fitter, but....
If that doesn’t work, I’m stumped.

have you thought about buying a diet and exercise plan from a bloke on the internet?
After 2 years of enforced core inactivity thru pelvic/groin injury I've never been less fit. Also gained back the stone I lost last summer. Ironically injured at the gym through poor instruction/insufficient induction. Finally getting less pain and warning signs so just restarted a swimming membership last week and found it shocking how my previous 50-60 lengths a session are no longer achievable. Still, started biking much more now. All small trips on bike, plus two longer evening/night rides a week. Started press-ups today. Had to have a rest after two. I kid you not.
As stated, shocking, but moving forwards one mile/length/sit-up at a time 👍🏼
*Edit - also back on the 5:2 plan.
Still improving at running and hope to do so a little past 50 though age will catch up eventually. Easiest way to improve is to take up a new sport! Don't think I'm likely to set any cycling PBs though.
God yes. 9 months of limited activities pre op and currently only able to walk a mile in 45 mins, I'm really looking forward to getting fitter. After doing all the physio properly, I'm going to spend some cash on time with a PT to keep building up strength, 6 months of gym membership, swimming a couple of times a week, and we've just bought a smart turbo. Goal is to walk Cat Bells by the end of 2018 (keeping it realistic) and then maybe aim for a sprint Triathlon (never done one before, and will depend if the knee allow it) in 2019, as a target and to raise money for the mountain rescue that picked me up with my knee collapse last autumn.
I'm really kind of looking forward to the opportunity.
Best of luck ahsat, look forward to your catbells pics! 👍🏻
Isn't everyone always going to get fitter? It's just part of the human condition.
Think I'm on the way up at the moment, cycling more regularly than ever despite a nine month old at home, as the 20km commute to work is genuinely the quickest way to get there so fits into family life quite well. Just need to try and work some intervals in, there's several short punchy climbs but they're quite irregularly spaced...
Wife also miraculously chilled about my fortnightly sneaking away at 5am for some proper length efforts on the road bike.
Having an intimidating ride to train for is helping massively, that 325 mile day is slowly slowly starting to look more realistic...
What day is that Monk?
that 325 mile day is slowly slowly starting to look more realistic…
I'd barely drive that ! let alone cycle it.
I'm not honestly sure i could make it in a day... 24 hours... hmmmm.
That sounds brutal Iain, best of luck man!
Yep, started early with running all through the winter, and thats helped, been floored for a couple of weeks with a killer cold though, so currently feeling a bit Bambi like. See what damage that's done when I go for a trot tonight.
Good luck ahsat
I'm waiting for a heart op, probably in the next couple of months. After the recovery period (or during if I'm allowed) I'm planning to get fit again as I've not been able to do much over the past couple of years. Just walking to start with a proper return to MTB planned for next year.

Amount of exercise for me is not the issue, 7 sessions per week is normal for me. The issue is the food intake and quietly thereof. So for me it’s about eating better simply. I also need to add some structure to my training rather than just going for a run/ride. But I’m not far off so am sure I’ll get back soon enough.
Yep I hope so. 7 weeks into recovering from broken back. Enjoying walking that little bit further each day and starting swimming again soon. Will be interesting and probably a bit soul destroying starting from zero, but given how close to not having the option I was I'm up for the challenge.
I'm trying very hard, but because of my "condition" I really have to pace myself, and give myself far longer for recovery than I'd like. Especially annoying since the local trails are so dry and so fun at the moment...
I am bad at restraint.
Lost a load of fitness and put on 10kg's when I had my back broken by a driver whilst I was cycling to work. A long time in hospital and many months not being able to do much. Over 2 1/2 years ago but I still struggle - full time sat at a desk and my back is done for after the 'drive' home. Trying to get on Zwift a couple of nights then out on the MTB at weekends.
I no longer cycle to work, nor ride on the roads due to how close to being paralysed I was. Slowly getting fitter and have lost about 4kg of the 10 so far. I'm certainly not the slowest in the group of lads I go out with - near the front on climbs, but overly cautious on the descents, so I'm near the slowest down.
But I'm riding, and my MTB skills are improving (having been a roadie) and recently knocked a whole minute off a local descent
Back pain does stop me doing as much, and there is now't I can do about it. I did buy a full sus MTB 5 months after breaking my back, and the plan once the claim comes through is buy me and the missus some good MTB's and sell one of the road bikes
The 325 mile day is the Lang Way Doon, except we're doing the Lang Way Oop instead, starting at Coldstream and finishing in Tongue. Was planned for June 23rd but now postponed until September, gives us a chance to do the Ride to the Ride to the Sun first, Cramond - Carlise - Cramond.
Fossy - can't really relate but stick at it, my only experience with back pain has taught me to resist becoming inactive, embrace ibuprofen, heat packs and core work, and buy a sit-stand desk and change positions throughout the day. Hang in there!
after 8 years of illness and bad luck, I have now started to be able to ride faster than 10 mph average.
managing 12 and 13mph, which is still pretty slow, but with what my body has been through in the last 8 years, I am well chuffed.
also I feel a lot fitter and stronger, in my head and body.
so all good here.
I'll get fitter than I am now simply because I enjoy riding in nice weather more than in the winter. I'll never get back to my peak though as responsibilities and priorities in life have changed.
After an injury last January (sciatica) then a summer/winter of various home improvement projects I didn't get to the gym as much as I'd want. So I have just joined a new gym (which is closer to work so I can nip in on a lunchtime) and started to increase sessions. Last week I accidentally took part in an advanced spin class (I just wanted to do a spin but the class was starting so the instructor asked me to join them). 45 minutes of riding hard without a saddle (had to be removed for the session :-O ) and I beat my previous max heart rate considerably (I hit 182bpm, previous highest was 172 and I am 50).
On Saturday I ran for the first time since last January, doing the Harrogate ParkRun in a reasonable time but I know I will beat it next week now that I understand the event properly.
Tomorrow I am finishing work early to get out on my road bike.
The addiction has started up again 🙂
That's the plan!
Lost fitness this winter, after a crash at Antur last September, breaking my collarbone.Knee problem also limited my trail running intensity ,so had to go down in distance.
On the up now,ran my fastest time in 12 months, last week and back on sufferfest.Just started indoor bouldering, wish I'd started earlier,,getting arm pumps at 54 is blooming great .
I'll never get back to where I was at 30, but I'm trying to get back to where I was a few years ago! I used to play 5-a-side with work colleagues and that made a big difference. Can't do that anymore for various reasons. Have started including some HIIT sessions into my rides home, seem to be working. Edinburgh Cycles post on Facebook to thank for that. Only problem with doing HIIT on the road, is car drivers can't cope with the change in speed, so I have to adapt accordingly!
Thanks all.
Crikey @wait4me, that puts things into perspective. Good luck.
And @fossy, I agree, sit-stand desk and far better chair (I've been lucky enough to get Hag Capisco's at both work and home), and if you can, walking some of the journey, has made a huge difference to my back. Mine was due to two prolapses, so minor by comparison, but I just to find sat all day at work and in the car, destroyed me too.
Isn’t everyone always going to get fitter? It’s just part of the human condition.
The amount of T-shirts I own that 'the tumble drier has shrunk' and things I can't do, I could 20 years ago suggests otherwise.
Yes. I'm getting way stronger, which is fun. Back to riding to work more again now, which is good for the cardio fitness too. Doing more yoga and mobility work as well.
For me getting fit is easy (assuming fitness is running "fast") left to my own devices I would probably run 50 miles per week. Injury and my apathy towards other sports lets me down however.
Im rehabilitating a broken ankle, been off work since December.
so, ive been getting out a little more than normal to try and increase range of motion.
i can now get into jeans a size smaller than before the accident, but weirdly, I haven’t lost a single pound.
Hoping this is gonna be a nice summer, that always helps.
