Hello,

We have a couple of friends coming to stay with us for New Year which we haven't seen for about six years, they were coming for Christmas but at the last minute (Boxing Day) they decided that they would spend it with friends at home, leaving us with loads of extra food and ruined plans for Xmas.

So, they're coming for New Year. Good stuff. They are due to arrive today, and have just said that one of the girls is bringing her new boyfriend with her - we have made tea for the friends, who we haven't seen for years and wanted to spend time with them.

Surely they should have told us in advance, not when they're about to arrive?

Both of us feel very used at the moment, and going to be hard to put a happy face on - surely they'd want to see us, not just use the house as somewhere to stay?

Thanks

Butty

They told you on boxing day that they weren't coming for Christmas?

we have made tea for the friends, who we haven't seen for years and wanted to spend time with them.

How will you be prevented from spending time with them.

Six years?

I doubt they're your friends anymore.

Tell them they must have the wrong house when they turn up.

depends how good friends they are. If they're really good friends who you love and love spending time with then what's another person in the house. At celebration times the more the merrier I think.

You're going to have two teenagers ineptly rutting, which might actually cause structural damage to your house?

Unless you change your outlook on their visit you're going to struggle to make them feel welcome in your home.

Doesn't sound like they're that good friends tbh from either side.

Switch the lights off and don't answer the door. They'll get the message.

I would have told them that it was their turn to bring the food, after having let you down in such a shabby manner.

When they turn up they'll probably ask for a key, what time breakfast is and when they have to check out by.

If you need to ask these questions, then they're not your friends. Friends wouldn't change Xmas plans on you with 24 hours notice; friends wouldn;t mind if other friends' kid brought a g/f with them and most relevantly friends don't not see each other for 6 years.

This would go down a treat on mumsnet! Given that they ditched you Christmas eve I think I'd have ditched them off for NY too but seeing as you haven't then best just get on with it. It is rude but they clearly don't care about messing people around, it's up to you if you decide to be messed around. Are they like the royale family??

btw I don't really see the problem, seems you are happy they are coming, you've continued your invite from christmas to new year.. an other place for dinner isn't really gonny make all that much difference, just divvy up the food to include the extra person.

I'd put it out my mind and get on with it, or like I say it's gonny be grim, I can feel the icy atmosphere from here. It's new year get bevvied and forget about it.

But if you really aren't happy, tell them to bolt, you've not seen them for 6 years, so call off on them. End of an old friendship probably, but up to you to decide if you care or not.

I'd have told them to go whistle cancelling on Christmas so late is just plain ****ing rude unless illness or death! I'd be seriously pis*ed off and they wouldn't be invited for New Years. Plus they may be good friends but it's rude to just bring their kids boyfriend along! piss taking friends. Cancel the New Year plans NOW so they have to re-arrange you'll have more fun on your own. Now go and read the "New years Eve anyone else CBA?" thread.

This.

You must have invited them for New Year after they had cancelled at Christmas ?

And an extra place at the table is hardly a massive problem. If you have individual portions of anything, just explain that you don't mind the extra person, but you didn't have time to plan for it, so everyone will have to make do.

Kill them all and bury them under the patio. That'll learn 'em!

They sound like inconsiderate p*ss takers. Can't be doing with people like that. Just go out tonight and let them sort themselves out.

Send them the link to this thread.

I would be furious if a Nate cancelled last minute cause they decided to spend time elsewhere. Granted there are emergencies when this may happen, but if no emergency I would cancel tonight citing you have cancelled as you have purchased nothing in the expectation that your freeloading mates would cancel first.

Go down the boozer instead so you are out when they knock

I try not to get too far beyond 2 years between seeing my oldest mate and former long time mountain biking buddy... only reason it goes that long is he lives in Oz! 6 years I would have given up on that one ๐Ÿ˜‰

Well. I turned up with my new girlfriend, and our hosts were really weird. I had to watch them all eat fishfingers and chips, then to top it all, I swear the guy was hiding in the wardrobe while we were getting it on...

Why do people start these threads, then not come back.

Bloody rude.

Perhaps the non-friend's daughter's boyfriend killed them all and he's now buried under his own patio. Teh ironing.

Because they sobered up and realised they posted things that never happened?
