There's a few nice bits in there including some overdue improvements to the Photos app, but I'm a bit indifferent about it compared with previous years.

i've heard it's mainly bug fixes and performance improvements.

which, if true, is exactly what i want from an OS, given that i hardly use any of the bells and whistles on Yosemite

There are many performance improvements, notably Metal, and they mean less effort required by the processors to do things. Less effort means longer battery life. That is a big deal.

Good points doris and Rachel. Better performance and stability - or more to the point a return to the performance and stability that got me loving Apple in the first place - will be very welcome.

In which case, I can't wait 🙂

Natural language in Spotlight sounds great and of course better performance is always welcome. Will be interesting to see how quickly Adobe integrate the Metal stuff into CC as that could bring some massive performance benefits for graphicy types. Of course, it look them a LONG time to sort out the Retina/GPU balls-up with Illustrator so I'm not holding my breath (nor will I be updating immediately!)

Is there an upload cap on the bandwidth Photos uses?

Lots of mention in that linky about gestures / matching iOS .. there's no touch screen Mac is there? Another step to 1 OS as per MS?

No, but the Magic Trackpad is very effective with multi-touch gestures.

Depends what you mean by "1 OS", brassneck. They already share a UNIX base and many of the same NextStep class libraries. It's pretty much the UI and memory management that's different these days, and for very good reasons if you've experienced Windows recently...

Will I resisted Yosemite because I don't like the flat icons. Daft aren't I? I guess it's probably time to update.

Been running the gold master since the press show earlier in the month. I like the automatic question to restrict FaceBook api when you go to log in. Notes looks like it could be big when combined with the iOS version. The other minor stuff makes for a decent experience on the desktop.

it will break something.
camera tethering in capture one, wacom tablet, my monitor calibration software, printer paper profiles or photoshop.
having been bitten on the arse once and lost £££ earning time to sorting it out i’ll avoid it until i know everything works as it should, not that photoshop does as i often have to swap to 6.6 from CS as it seems to bring with it a memory hogging kernel task which ups the fan speed and causes a brush lag and stuttering in screen redraws with big files.

I rolled back the preview from my main Macbook the other day, there were just too many features that hadn't been finished. Eg: Disk Utility, which had a lot of things I use not yet included.

I upgraded both my iPad Air and iPhone 5 to IOS9 both have been fine if anything the phone is faster. Think I would be booking a Guru appointment if it had had an adverse affect on either.

Will probably risk the El Capitan upgrade just maybe not tomorrow.

Not quite full time, but certainly regularly (and now in fact). I love it. The trackpad, with Force Touch, is brill, but I am a huge fan of how well Apple have implemented multi-touch trackpads on their MacBooks. The force touch is the cherry on the cake.

doesn't seem to have a click trackpad

It does have a click, it's just not a mechanical click. It's just haptic feedback. It feels just like a real mechanical click.

I'm still on OS mountain Lion and i'm not interested in upgrading, in fact i've been advised by email not to by a few companies who's stuff i own, All my software audio plug-ins work just fine and are stable so are my various bits of hardware (synths/controllers/24bit usb audio. I'm happy living in 2012 😀

I've been using the beat since Beta1 came out. Most notable improvements for me are:

1. Vastly improved network performance over WiFi and support for wider range of routers. They've backed out the network stack they introduced in Yosemite and reinstalled the original OSX stack. This 'upgrade' alone is worth the upgrade (same applies to iOS9).
2. Split screen ala Windows 7. Being able to put to windows side by side is an excellent feature. Something I use on my work Windows PC all the time so now a similar feature is available on OSX is a real boon for me.
3. Improved Spotlight search and use of natural search terms, 'files i worked on last week'

Been running the Betas since v3, and no major showstoppers. GM seed has been running very nicely for a week or so now, and the fact the main updates in the latest 11.10.1 release is new emojis seems to suggest they got most things right off the bat.

I am a big fan of the new notes application. It wont replace the likes of Evernote for power users, but fits my jotting down needs nicely with the new additions of adding photos, scribbles, maps etc.

Some of the other improvements like split screen etc are not really new as I use window snapping via BTT, which I find much more versatile.

Not really; it's nice to have your PC exactly as you want it. And you can!

If you make a copy of the icons you wish to use and tuck them away in a folder you can simply paste them wherever you want once you've made the OS upgrade. Here's a link to show how it's done. It's a link for Mavericks but I would imagine it'll be the same in Yosemite and El Capitan...

I upgraded to the gold master the other week and it broke my Junos Pulse VPN client so had to restore from my time machine.

I won't be upgrading for some time yet!

Didn't have time to upgrade yesterday, will do so today as I always take the new software asap. If there is a speed bump for my 2009 Mini that will be good although it runs fast enough for me anyway. Will upgrade the wife's 2012 MBP too.

All this and a ride later as the weather is so nice.

"Think I'll pass for a while after the Ipad Air is now useless due to the slowness after the IOS9 update. "

I think you may have another issue here.

iOS9 has had no impact on the performance of my iPad Air or the iPad 3 we have.

Ah good point, forgot the trackpad as it is of 0 interest to me (stuck in my ways really, like mice). Mybe should look again at that.

Rachel - I think I actually meant 'the illusion of one OS' which is maybe where 10 is getting ahead - although it's a debate as to whether this is a good idea - iOS and OS X worlds still feel separate in comparison. I have a 10 laptop, an XBox 360 and an old demo Nokia somewhere with some version of tile based windows on it and they feel very similar. I have a bunch of iPads / iPhones and a couple of Macs and they still feel like different worlds even with things like hand off and matching apps, and that funny pop over screen with all your apps on (commander??).

Anyway, as long as smoke isn't pouring out of peoples Macs I'll give it a go later.

iOS9 is seriously laggy on my iPad 3. Time for a full clean and reinstall. Joy.

We'll not talk about the iPhone 4S......

Yeah, it works fine (possibly slight improvement) on my iPad Air & iPhone 5. Probably worth a clean & re-install.

Restored to 8.41 and no problems now. Not sure how I could have other problems as it is a closed system. I have no input in how it upgrades itself. I will wait for the next patch for IOS 9 as they already have a 9.01 a week after the initial release, no doubt 9.02 is just around the corner.

As predicted 9.02 available today. That's two patches in as many weeks. Apple sort your shit out. El Capitan can wait a long while before I upgrade.

Downloading now for my iMac. Being on a 'rural broadband' connection that'll take most of the day. If it works okay, I'll upgrade my macbook air but that's the one I use at clients so I'm not risking it yet. If I do, it'll be on their network as that'll take about 10 minutes!

Installed Ok but now one of my external monitors is not detected. Found the now hidden detect monitors button - no effect. Google - known issue apparently.

Otherwise looks no different. Feels slower if anything on my newish mac mini. Lots of ball rolling.

Hopefully will settle in otherwise I'll switch back for the time being.

EDIT: Couple of power off/ reboots resolved the monitor issue.

Can anyone that's on it have a look at Disk Utility for me, and see if it looks as comprehensive as the Yosemite version?

Interested to hear that the previous networking stack has been stuck back in-

Updated, all I have noticed so far is the beachball has changed 😳
I like the notes update allowing photos and sketches to be included and shared between devices

Downloaded overnight (3hrs quoted) and then about an hour to install and do post login stuff like email rebuild.

iOS 9.0.2 also released overnight

@codybrennan

It's been brought up to speed. The earlier versions didn't even have unmount options.

@Cody. Np. Any specific questions, just ask.

@jambalaya In my case I use Airmail, so not a major issue, but do agree it would be handy to know how much space is taken up by old email attachments etc. I guess in iOS they assume users will use the settings > general > storage and icloud useage > manage storage to see how much space mail app is using.

...which is hardly an elegant solution.

Can we ask for fixes too?

Ok, fix Calendar back to a one click entry into a day from the "month" view...

That'd help.. as is it seems a random case of double taps, single taps, random pressure and downright end of pen stabs 🙄

Sure. Write the issue on a postcard, and send it to:

I gotz problemz

Cupertino,
California,
United States

They'll get right on it.

In the meantime, you on about Calendar for iOS or OSX?

Re IOS9
IOS 8 really screwed up mu iPad. It became very slow to react to anything ( esp in safari)and it use to freeze all the time in web pages / big data sites
So I jumped at IOS9 - now it freezes and crashes. ****ing excellent. So the iPad is a bit useless - but I guess they want me to buy a new one ...

Calendar on iPhone IOS9.0.2 (and 0.1) jut had an an issue with not being able to access "days" in the calendar when going from the Month view. Dunno why, before the update you could just tap the day you wanted to add an entry then add it.. Now nothing happens if you tap it, Jambalya said "double tap" and I've been doing that but hey, thats like random init. SOmetimes it works, mostly not and I have to then go into select the month and access it from there.. Also, for some reason when tapping a day to see an entry in there, again can't access the entry without resorting to the random tap/move to month view malarky..

OSX El Capitan installed. Not liking split screen, seems very un-intuitive and doesn't appear to work with mail which remains hidden behind safari for example.

I don't have to use it though, and haven't noticed any other differences really so can't grumble. It was a free update after all. Oh, the notes thing is great, about time it became useful!

Anyone running into problems running an external monitor on a MacBook? I can't get it to recognise mine at all and the forums saying it is an issue. Tried the (now hidden) 'Detect Displays' button in the "Displays' screen on System Preferences but nothing is coming up 🙁

Capture one: broken
Photoshop: usable
Wacom tablet: broken
Eizo screen calibration: working
focus stacking software: no idea
davinci resolve grading software: some issues

So thanks to the Guinea pigs it's a big NO from me until all the above are working faultlessly

Why do they have to keep on fiddling? Is it that difficult to develop something simple that 90+% of users require and just stick with it?

Updates this, updates that, it's putting me right off my breakfast. I do however still find iOS far more preferable to the MS operating system and its demands for daily, in your face, updates.

Stop messing about with it and make the basics work properly, is what I'd say at my first meeting in charge.

I quite like it. That said, I'd just sorted out a fresh install of Yosemite so my laptop was nice and clean and I haven't yet tried to set all my accounts/apps back up.

I'm on a late 2010 MBP and my machine is running faster than it has been for some time (although I suspect most of that is down to a good tidy up and fresh install).

Has anyone else had problems with it on a MacBook at it not recognising external monitors? I have a brand new laptop and neither output is working with external monitors. I am trying to identify whether it is El Capitan causing the problem or the graphics card is goosed.

It's been a while since you've used MS then as Apple seem to be outdoing them in the update stakes.

Definitely avoid Ubuntu, then! FWIW my Win 10 install at home just silently updates in the background, every now and then it tells me it's done something. Nothing like "daily demands".

Why do they have to keep on fiddling? Is it that difficult to develop something simple that 90+% of users require and just stick with it?

Apart from the fact that software development is quite difficult, there's also the fact that marketing demands new and shiny things to keep interest - which means fiddling.

Nope, mine seems faster now.

I didn't realise but think that time-machine was doing a full backup (200gb) after the install, so things were a bit slower. Since that's finished and I've done a restart everything is running perfectly.

@mikey I think they try and stagger the updates so if you are not a "fanboy" following the announcements they wait a while before prompting

Cheers Jam.

So, I'm guessing from the name, El Capitan, that it's essentially just an update to Yosemite (El Capitan being in Yosemite, of course), rather than a brand new OS: Is that correct?
