We were gifted a Mac by a friend who went through a messy divorce.
We have our own login but the app store is tied in to his account.
I want to update numbers but it is asking for his password. Obviously we can't ask him for it. Is there any way we can access the app store using our apple I.D? The app has our initials on it .
Have you got admin rights for the Mac?
I'd be inclined to wipe it and start fresh if you have - could stop other issues in future. Then you can just sign in to AppStore and download a fresh copy of Numbers (it's free anyway).
Or you could delete that Numbers app, sign in to AppStore with your login, and download Numbers again.
If it's tied to their iCloud or they have find my mac switched on you're shit out of luck without talking to them & getting them to sign out of the device remotely.
Once they've done that that - wipe it & re-install. Should be able to do that by restarting & hitting CMD & R to get it into recovery mode

@the-muffin-man I don't think that has anything to do with the iCloud account. The Mac will still not attach to iCloud unless the previous owner disconnects it.

It’s apparently tied to the former owner’s account, but I’m failing to understand why they ‘obviously can’t ask him for it’, ‘cos there’s nothing obvious about it to me!
Having just done the same make sure you sign out of iTunes as well. It's a really messed up way of doing stuff tbh, account wipes should be simple.
But again, how can you not ask him? Or us "messy divorce" a euphemism here?
You need to sign out of the App Store and iTunes too. My guess is though this wasn’t your friend’s to give away or surely you could just ask.
You’ll also want to check that your “friend’s” Apple ID isn’t still being used for Find My… and that there is no firmware password set. 🤦🏻♂️ there are instructions on how to prepare a Mac for sale/transfer.

The computer was the husband’s . The wife could log onto a separate account. The husband left his account open ,the wife found evidence of stuff worthy a divorce. He leaves rapidly.
Wife gives us computer as she no longer wants it in the house. They are both properly minted so buying a new Mac is a frivolity.
Have tried to delete Numbers and reinstall but they want the password .
Will look at wiping computer when I get a spare evening.
