I think Jamie might be the only one with his ironometer switched on today 😉

I'll let the "daft muppet" one go for today seeing as it's too sunny to be in a bad mood.

My phone upgrade is due from June. I'll just strip most of the stuff off my 3G and use it as an ebook reader and iPod, that'll leave more space for maps on the new phone. Those OS maps take up a lot of room. The multitasking is perfect for me, being able to have the radio backgrounded while being able to use the book reader or GPS, or background GPS while taking a photo of a scene or landmark. Unless Anquet, Viewranger or Memory Map allow in-app photos with geotagging, which would be nice. Folders is another plus, being able to bundle apps under type is something I've wanted for ages. Having the iBook store on the phone's nice, I use Stanza and Kindle, but far too often I go to buy a book and find there's geographical restrictions on copyright, which is a PITA, so with luck this could solve the issue, as the book sources for the other apps are in the US, a UK/Europe source is much better, a lá iTunes.

Plenty of waffle that's of no interest to me (iAds, seriously?) but with multitasking the real limitation of the iPhone is gone (well ok, maybe except maybe for the battery life) so I think it's going to be a big step forward.

Now if only they'd add a find function to safari on it, I don't think I'd have any major complaints any more.

I still have one major gripe! Lack of flash support is unforgivable, if i didnt have so much money invested in the iphone (im thinking TomTom & dock) i think id replace it in a heart beat for an HTC or similar.

Same issue with the IPAD, i mean thats just unbelivable to me, no on demand services accept Iplayer.

(I don't have an iPhone, my phone does flash perfectly - genuine query)

What do you miss flash for? Why would you want it?*

(* I block all flash on my desktop machines with click2flash, hardly ever find myself clicking it....)

I have a bookmark that adds "Find in Page" functionality if that would be of any use?

Not sure if this will work on the forum but try copying this text and pasting it as the address of a new bookmark in Safari:

Many others already work. As always with the web, p0rn leads the way (pornhub and mofosex are youtube's for frit and both work just fine). More (non-porn) will appear as flash is dropped in favour of html5.

GrahamS - nice one! Thanks for that

no probs. Glad it worked.

I also have one to list all the images on a page if that's useful to you
javascript:Ai7Mg6P='';for%20(i7M1bQz=0;i7M1bQz%3Cdocument.images.length;i7M1bQz++)%7BAi7Mg6P+='%3Cimg%20src='+document.images%5Bi7M1bQz%5D.src+'%3E%3Cbr%3E'%7D;if(Ai7Mg6P!='')%7Bdocument.write('%3Ccenter%3E'+Ai7Mg6P+'%3C/center%3E');void(document.close())%7Delse%7Balert('No%20images!')%7D
I hope the irony of this doesn't escape regulars on here. There have been any number of threads about how Flash slows down computers, and how CPU cycles ramp up due to Flash adverts, there was even a thread not so long ago where one or two members were banned because they openly advocated using Adblocker on Firefox, and then we get muppets whining about how their miserable lives are being wrecked because their chosen smartphone doesn't work with Flash.
BruceM, get over yourself. Flash is crap, a CPU hog, used by lazy web developers who can't be arsed to try using alternatives. I've had my iPhone for nearly eighteen months, and there are very, very few websites that are unusable due to Flash. This site I spend hours on, and there is only one ad that I can't see, and it's about time Chain Reaction got up to date and produced an ad using the same tools as the banner ads at the top. Flash will not ever be available on the iPhone, because Steve Jobs wants it dead and buried. Already HTML5 is being increasingly used as an alternative, and a good thing too. 450000 iPads sold so far, and something like 75-85 million iPhones worldwide being used by people who's lives aren't blighted by a lack of some crappy moving pictures on a few websites.

Gees, that feels like an awfully personal attack for me expressing my opinion. The dreaded STW bites me for the first time:).
Still its an opinion i stand by, clearly yours differs to mine.

You seem to concentrate your argument on adverts, to be fair your right i dont care about the lack of adverts, i doubt many do.

I use flash for on demand services a fair bit, with a lot of the basic
TV networks having a flash based players, Iplayer stands out as the only useable on the iphone... at least to my knowledge, if you have other infor please share.

I can maybe accept not everyone wants to watch catch up tv on a phone, but on the ipad i certainly would want that ability.

The reason flash won’t be incorporated into apple products like the IPad and Iphone is so Apple can control their revenue sources, at least according to Adobe. The fact is they don’t want people to watch on demand services, they want you to purchase from ITunes. I get the reason just perfectly, thanks. I just think less of apple for doing it.

Just to add to the Flash debate, recently bought a PC as a media centre very cheaply without an OS. Installed Linux (Ubuntu) and soon discovered that Flash support is so poor for Linux that it struggled to stream even low res youtube vids, but played 1080p vids fullscreen no probs.

Delved a little deeper, chatted to a programmer at work, looked on Linux forums looking for a fix and it seems its unavoidable. It's poorly programmed cack apparently. Adobe refuse to release the source code so friendly open source programmers can fix scaling problems etc. etc.

From what I know, Jobs refuses to use Flash because he thinks the programmers are lazy, it's so processor intensive that the iphones battery would only last minutes anyway.

Iphone doesn't not run flash because the Iphone is cack, it doesn't run it because flash it utter crap.

Only just had this problem recently otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to contribute. It's annoyed me tbh. Bring on silverlight and BBC et al. adopting it.

P.S. Installed win7 instead now, flash runs better but it still ain't great. Booooo!

Having used flash on linux myself, i can only agree with you, support is poor to say the least, but its far from impossible to get it running well on a linux install, i have more by luck than skill had it working well. I would think the 3Gs Hardware is more than capable of running flash without huge problems in terms of processing power. battery life is always going to be an issue, my argument for that is simple and that is i am more than capable of looking after the relatively limited battery life of a smart phone, i can choose to use it when its appropriate to use it.

This said im really not intrested in getting into a forum debate so i will give one last input and leave you to it. I suppose my Point is this, however you look at it, weather its down to Adobe's poor support or Apple not willing to support it. Its a feature that does exist on many other smart phones, Android either already does or soon will support it (I havent checked recently, last i heard, was that it would be supported at least on newer handsets), Windows Mobile certainly does support it and although i've never used it, i've never heard complaints. Apple's Iphone does not support it and will not.
