What exactly is a "work ethic"? I'm not sure that I'd want to have a "work ethic" Sounds too much like hard work.

As a youth of yesterday i loved the idea of work. Oh wait, no i didn't, and neither did the youth of last week, last year or the youth of way back when. Only the youth of the days of yore had a work ethic, but they were a bunch of *****.

Bit of both, Don. Thankfully in English, as my French is a bit more rusty than I'd like it to be!

How's that work then? Seriously, it can't be a bit of both. If you want someone to give it the once over, give me a shout.

Well, there's no powerpoint, so that to my mind makes it less of a presentation, more of a speech. Am not being paid for it, so that makes it more of a presentation than a speaking engagement.

Oh, and there's a nice dinner to follow! 🙂

Quite the opposite actually. I spent most of it firing a sawn-off 12-guage at effigies of Her Maggiesty. Noisy business.

TBH I think many folk today, not just kids, have swallowed the whole 'no such thing as Society' crap and bought into the 'I'm alright Jack **** you' greedy selfish mentality, and no longer want to work for the good of the society or community in which they live, but merely for their own personal gain. Kids see their parents making only the bare minimum effort, and if they can't see scope for personal gain, simply can't be bothered.

Minimum effort, maximum personal reward is today's game. Pity that mentality don't make for a decent society where people actually give a shit about each other.

So yeah, I refer back to my previous comment in Post 3....

I met Eve earlier. She is younger than me. Is she the youth of today? She wanted to know how much i earn. Not sure if this is relevant.

The youth of today have never had a work ethic.

Once upon a time, workers worked hard for their employers and were rewarded with loyalty. This went both ways of course both ways and everybody was happy.

Then HR seemed to spring up. Now if your role changes, you may find yourself applying for ones own job, with competition, if business needs change, instead of developing the staff already employed, the company will look at making the old workers redundant but will then hire new workers more in tune with the re-directed business.

the youth of today have seen all this and as business seems to have little ethic for its staff, it follows that its staff's ethic starts to decrease. turn up, do your job, piss of home again.

Work ethics go both ways IME

I remember once reading a diatribe about the indolence and the insolence of the youth of today.

It was in a Latin or Greek translation I was doing at school, so the commentary was about 2,000 years old at least. Sub sole nihil novi est.

At that age my big ambition was to not work. 🙂

With Coolhandluke on this, there are very few jobs for life to commit to, so you just turn up, do the shift, go home and look for the next contract.
I'm fortunate to have something fairly stable and enjoy what I do. My GF on the other hand has been contract chasing for the last 4 years and doing a Masters to try and make something permanent.

I have played a part in the creation of 2 youth of today and one future youth of today. I hope they have learned that work is something you may need to do, but to pursue financial rewards for the results you get rather than the time you put in communting to some god awful corporate hell-hole , wearing a suit, and trying to please retards too dumb to work for themselves. Or something. In other words, I've set a bad example, and hope they follow in my footsteps.

I loved working as a teenager - worked every holiday, evenings, weekends from 15 onwards. Hated University - found it all rather pointless and just wanted a proper job. My work ethic is still very strong now - must be Methodist family background...

I had taken two young guys on once and one just wanted to just sit there and txt
and thought it was funny when i told him to get off his arss and put the phone away
and get on with helping the guys out.
Then the other was more interested in what he was looking like and did not want to
wear glasses or contact lenses and measured all cabinet door handles different widths
and out of line.

Both went within a week.

All I can say is that in East London where you see so many people migrants and immigrants on most council
estates not doing bugger all for there money and Local council in Tower Hamlets instead of housing the younger people they constantly gave the houses and flats to immigrants that made the younger generation
having to move outside or in the borough, but not housing them but having to buy. Including myself
so I suppose i am one of the dont give a s**t people when looking at council community crap.

Must say when I go to Cardiff to see family and in and around Cwm Carn they have a strong
Family and community bond where the Councils have not done to what I had gone through including friends

I also went recently to Ashington to see some friends and there is a strong community of friends and
family's and was great to see the younger generation look after the older people and give them great
respect. Must say would be very happy to live there.

I had no work ethic when I was a youth. Seems to me that's part of being one. Then I grew up a bit and developed one.

But suggesting that kids today aren't working because there's too many benefits and they don't have a work ethic seems to be forgetting that the job market's ****ed. I lived on benefits at the start of the year, and you know what, it's rubbish. And while looking for work I don't remember seeing many "no experience needed" positions that weren't either menial or awful (doorstep commission-only salesman was what I saw the most of). So I don't envy them.

Unless you are very lucky first jobs don't tend to be meaningful.

Jesus Haribo Christaedes on a tiny three-wheeled pedal vehicle, has the 1970s returned? 😯

Do you actually know anything about anything, or do you just spout BNP type crap as a matter of course?

Seriously?

I was born and raised in TH, and see things very differently.

Wonder why that is, eh?

grantway clearly has no ethic encouraging him/her to work on grammar or spelling. For shame.

Oh, and it is of course a load of semi-racist horse-shit!

I work in a large further education college.

99% of the young people I encounter work pretty hard at their studies and also have part time jobs. They work as hard as is necessary to get to college and to get by. A few don't. Has anything actually changed? No.

There is a link between families living below the poverty line and associated motivation to work but that isn't necessarily the fault of the individual. For every 'dole scrounger' theres someone else who's hauled themselves up by their bootstraps and made a success of themselves.

Anyway I thought that the wilting cock Cameron had made being poor a criminal offence now?

Just a guess, but is it 'cause your dad was one of these immigrants in Tower Hamlets that grantway is talking about, what the council gave a house to (he only qualified because he was an immigrant) and what did "bugger all" for his money (again he only qualified for free money because he was an immigrant) ?

It's just those initial stirrings of racism, which are sufficient to make you feel slightly uncomfortable, before fully rampant racism is achieved, I assume.

I'm supposed to be 'mentoring' three of our younger (22-23, recently out of uni) staff who are just starting out on a fairly well developed career track in engineering. I've been a little surprised how little they seem to care about putting the time or effort in but can understand it on reflection, issues seem to be:

1) Loyalty, they know they are entirely expendable and have seen co-workers being forced to reapply for their own jobs in the short time they have been with us

2) Debt, they owe an awful lot of money already post-uni and can't really see any way out of that so they spend most of their income on going out etc rather than 'committing' in any way, plenty of our older staffs 'work ethic' is as a result of their fear of repossession rather than any 'nobility of labour'.

3)Overseas competition, they have accepted that most of the jobs in our sector will go abroad at some point in their careers as we simply can't compete with low-wage outfits with a lack of basic H&S/environmental restrictions applied to them and people in the UK generally don't care as long as its cheap. Right now we get by on quality but increasingly we are losing that edge as China and India 'industrialise' research (and IP theft in Chinas case)

4) Frustration at what they see as an unfair tax system, without being sucked into the Maily Telegraph quotes they are pretty hacked off that they see people in their cohort from school sitting in council housing having kids (facebook seems to make this worse as you can actually see it) rather than working and one particular sore point seems to be the way that all newbuild flats now have 'affordable housing units' in them - all three complain about having what they see as 'chav' neighbours who have got the same housing as them 'on the state' while they work to pay a private landlord.

TBH I can see why they can't be bothered with 'buying in' to a culture of long hours as they have little prospect of a long term career or a standard of living comparable with people in similar jobs would have had 5/10/20 years ago particularly as regards housing. Suspect we will see them moving overseas once the training/golden handcuffs period is over.

I have never worked on any newbuild where some of the units were for private letting and some for HA letting. The mix has always been open market sales with rented HA or HA/part ownership. And if people buy to let, then that is a minority of cases - not the norm.

I have to say how deeply satisfying I find it to hear that your stuck up snotty university graduates are appalled at having to live next to "poor people" 🙂

You what? Who the hell does any work at uni?

The yoof I know are little different to the yoofs I knew. They do have higher expectations of life than we did, which I guess is always the case, but may be a little unfounded by the looks of things.
