Say for example I wanted an app developed. iOS initially but multi-platform in time.

Rather a company did it than an individual. Ongoing support is vital.

Where would I start looking?

Depends on the type of app. I have lots of contacts but they only specialise in certain fields PM me what your looking for and maybe i could put you in touch with someone.

By asking if you need an 'app'.

What you need is a solution, plenty of development/design/strategic companies out there will help you but good ones will tell you if you actually need an app.

elliot-20 is right - what is it that makes you believe an app is the right solution over, say, a website that looks good (and functions well) on smartphones?

of course I don't 'need' one, I can do everything I need to now with a PC and a bluetooth connection. However, my customers would like to do it with a phone instead...

So this is the business I work in... a couple of comments for you.

Developing an app can be an expensive business. If you go to a UK software house, think 5 figures for anything of substance. You can go offshore for better prices, but you'll need to do much more management on your part and the risk is higher. If you need to go to a company, find one near enough to you that you can go and see them face to face.

Unless you've got a biggish company behind you and a substantial budget, then be really cautious. Allocate a modest budget to find out whether your idea is technically feasible and what all the practicalities would be of developing an app (what phones do you need to target, how are you going to test, how are you getting the app to market etc etc). If a software house won't do this for you, don't deal with them.

If you'd like, PM me and I'll drop you half a dozen links to smallish UK companies that do this sort of thing. I'll include mine but won't tell you which one it is! If nothing else it will tell you something about what to look for.

I wasn't suggesting whether it was a base 'need'. I was simply questioning if an app was the solution you require. There are plenty of options out there that aren't apps hence why I suggested asking for a solution.

I have this same discussion with many of my clients. All come to us with the need for an app. Most actually don't need and app all together. They just assume that's what they need as they don't know there are many, perhaps cost effective, alternative solutions to their problem

As I said, a good consultancy agency will work out what is right for you.
