Hello all,
As much as I’d like not to have to rely on a car I’m afraid we are not their quite yet. We do take public transport, Shanks’ pony and velocipede whenever we can, but at the moment we still need a family car. Just looking for some advice on our next step.
Our ageing XC90 battle bus is still going strong, but we want to change while it’s still got some life and value left in it. New car has to be spacious - 5 seats is alright, but space for 3 kids and accompanying crap is essential, petrol automatic, raised driving position is preferred.
Been going mad looking for the last two weeks and the best deal I can find that we can afford is a new SEAT Ateca on 0% finance over 4 years. The monthlies are fairly low and the deposit is ok.
If we bought a second hand car with a personal loan we would be looking at least a five year old car (older for one we’d want) and with it all the bills and problems that we are used to.
I know on PCP deals you pay the depreciation and take that hit, own nothing at the end of it and all that stuff, but it does seem the most affordable thing to do (which is why they are so popular I guess). They work out cheaper than financing a nearly new car too as Dealers give more incentives.
Am I mad?
Thanks for your help, and apologies again.
A lot of people have had good experiences with PCP, and yes the payments are smaller than outright new purchase. Personally, I prefer unsecured loan for a three year old car from a main dealer. Slightly more expensive, perhaps, but the repayments are more capital and less depreciation (you are still paying depreciation of course!), but there will be some capital at the end. Modern cars are so well made, I have no issues with buying used and keeping for a long time.
As for choice, I like Honda CRV's, but the latest might be a squeeze for three adults in the back all the time. I've had the previous two models in diesel, and the next one will be a hybrid once this one dies (120K miles and no sign yet).
Tha is for reply. This is a dull topic isn’t it? Two days until 0% is no more, Brexit price rises (planned in advance), might just go for it.
What about pch as opposed to pcp, no worry about residuals then. Same payment every month no matter what, end of term give it back.
Below is a link to a mates website for a vw tiguan, how does that tie in figure wise?

I'm very wary. My boss has been told for three years 'don't worry about the excess miles, we will sort it at end of pcp'.
Today's bill was £3000....
Or you can roll it into new PCP, just an extra £100+ a month...
Seems like a borderline mis-selling scam to me.
When I had access to the company scheme, the company paid any excess mileage fee. This was basically a subsidy to high mileage drivers and I commuted about 30k miles per year. Handed one back with 70k excess miles and didn’t pay a penny. Private pcp will not be the same.
Then they offered relocation and I took it with two years to run on a car that sat on the drive as I cycled to work! I still had done an excess of miles 75k in two years, so karma evened out!

Your boss sounds like an idiot, excess mileage charges are clearly stated in PCP deals
Tiguan deal not bad but not as good as I’ve got. It seems the “clever” way to do it is to take the PCP on a percentage and get a really good discount from the dealer (as opposed to 0% with minimal discount), then pay it off within a short period using a 0% credit card - best of both worlds. Not sure I’ve got the audacity to do that as I’m pretty sure the salesman will lose out, and get annoyed. We’ve all got to earn a living.
Our mileage is low and won’t go over the 8000 miles.
I got an ateca on 0% pcp last year. Came from a kia sportage on pcp, i would of had another one but kia just could not match the seat ££. A year on i am happy wih the Ateca once a few rattles got sorted. Check delivery times if you go for an ateca as i hear they can be quite a few months in some cases.
June delivery. It’s a wait but there’s no rush.
What you paying for the ateca? The lad I know is very keen on matching deals.

That’s his job, to make sure it’s worth it. Not yours to worry about.
