As there isn’t an operational air base nearby, probably some sort of QRA for the Commonwealth Games for visiting dignitaries

I suspect its more likely to be refuelling. Having apaches as QRA would seem a rather heavy step up in UK security measures. What exactly are they wanting to stop?
I guess they could be somewhat useful for surveillance but badly outmatched by the Shadow spy planes.
