I'm wondering how important the black plastic strip is that fills the gap in the underside of the bars?

Does it make things any quieter?

Oh yes. Very much so. It's a bugger to fit though but much easier with fairy liquid

Ah hang on - I don't mean the strip on top with the gradations on it. There's a strip underneath which is just plain black plastic - is that what you meant?

I've gone from Aerobars to Wingbars. They are quieter - the Aerobars used to whistle in the rain. One of the differences is those strips covering the undersides; whether that's the reason, I've no idea.
