Ok I know it's not a proper photo editing tool but it's good enough for me. Anyway I've now started having problems when I click import, the whole thing freezes and won't do anything. Tried reinstalling but no good, a quick look round Google and it seems to be fairly common but I can't find a solution. Any help much appreciated.

try using the add folder option.....

I use it loads, but don't use it to import from a camera (as it's much slower than just copying the files across).

Thanks for that, that's how I had to import my last pictures. Reading around the web it seems Google has lost interest in it
