Has anyone signed up for Netflix
If so would you recommend it.
Are the movies up to date, if so do you pay more
or is it one cost for all films.

There was a Netflix vs Lovefilm thread last week I think. Might be worth finding it to see what was said.

I've used both and found NF and LF streaming packages and found that they are both pretty similar which was niether one had anything I really wanted to watch.

All the films are pretty old and have probably been on tv or are in your dvd collection. As for the tv series they only have a few seasons of anything decent.

However I think love film are doing HD streaming, but they use silverlight which is about a 1000's sh*tter than flash.

Basically I think they are both very limited, Netflix in the states is meant to be really good but over here with Sky's strangle hold on decent US tv, it's bit of a lame duck.

you should be able to get a free trial of both - what have you got to loose? Just make sure you make a note of the date you need to cancel the DDs

personally I have been with lovefilm (DVDs in the post) for years. When they initially launched the streaming service through PS3 I wasn't that impressed (picture quality was rubbish) - but it has improved a lot. Through virgin broadband it is close to DVD (but nowhere near blu ray) quality. I actually think their selection is pretty good - good mix of classic/ cult and a fair few "current" movies - yes you aren;t going to find the avengers on there - but they have lots of film 4 type stuff.

Personally I'm a film geek - and enjoy it as an extra to the postal service. But it isn;t at all bad for 6 quid a month just for streaming

I tried the free trial of netflix and found the picture quality to be good, and the UI to be very good on PS3 - but there was very little I wanted to watch. Someone commented that it was like the selection of DVDs you find in the bargain bin at the 24 hour garage, pretty much spot on.

but like I say - give both free trials a go

If you want to watch a film - any film - it's good. There will always be something to watch.

However, if you want to watch a specific film, you've got a 99% chance of it not being on there.

I like it, and I've discovered some great films on there that I'd not consider buying. The recommendations are pretty accurate - I've seen all the top ten it suggested for me!

Thanks for reminding me to can cancel Netflix! Picture seems good, streaming works well bu the film selection is poor - we didn't use it a lot so not worth it.
I might try again in the future though.

Shark bait +1,

Films are pretty old, although there's a few good series's on it, most are quite pap. I'll be having a look at love film instead, however I can't put that through the apple tv....

Tried both and think Netflix is better. Neither are great for watching the latest blockbusters, so they don't really replace your local DVD rental place. Where Netflix won it for me is that it's got a load of TV series and comedy shows rather than being all about films. Bear in mind I don't have Sky or Virgin; I just have Freeview Lite. Netflix - combined with iPlayer - probably constitute more of our viewing than broadcast TV.

I never felt like I got my money's worth with Lovefilm, but I'm happy to pay for Netflix.

I use NF on the ipad and I use a vpn to get access to the US NF library. I imagine you can do something similar with it on a proper computer too. The US library is waaaaaay bigger.
NF detects that you are "travelling" when behind the VPN and hey presto, easily 5 times the number of things to choose from. It actually makes it more difficult to pick something to watch.

A close friend has it on her iPad and streams to her Apple TV, and is fairly happy with the selection, she doesn't have satellite telly, and only watches occasionally. She also has Lovefilm, but that won't stream from the Pad, due to Lovefilm still refusing to allow the facility, due to 'copyright and security issues' despite those issues being sorted out at the last OS upgrade, to the satisfaction of Netflix and the BBC.

Netflix
Rubbish old films, lots of TV series - some worth watching.
Streaming works well, but nothing in HD
If you want a HD film that is recent - iTunes, but one film will cost almost the same as a month on ntflix
