Yup, I bought a 3DConnexion SpaceNavigator personal edition for £45 (new, from amazon) about 18 months back. But I use it for CAD, was never very taken with it in Google Earth, it does exactly what you'd expect but it loses its novelty in minutes TBH!

Also use a 3dConnexion for work (CAD). Takes a few minutes to get the hang of it but well worth it. I had a quick play with Google earth but it didn't seem as easy to use. They did a version for home use which was about £45 but looking at their website it looks like you're right, cheapest about £100.

You used to be able to get a good education discount from 3d connexion. Do you know a student? Not sure if they still do.
