Specifically the HTC Vive, which intrigues me greatly, with the ability to move around a lot more than the Oculus Rift or Playstation VR. Anyone taken the plunge? Whats your thoughts and are the games to look out for?
I'm waiting on Diminished Reality (DR) which is reality with all the bits I don't like removed, like Boris Johnson, cutting the grass, tailgater's, football etc. etc.. I would definitely pay for something that could just remove such things from my existence.
VRGirlz = 21st century hedge porn.
I tried a 'warehouse deal' from Amazon on PS VR. Got it for £280 slightly used.
Struggled to find any game that was good enough to warrant the outlay and ended up sending it back for a refund.
When the games catch up it will be awesome. Until then...
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE VR!

aren't there a couple of VR games that are meant to be brilliant?
a robocop type one?
Tried a few headsets, they've come on massively.
The vive is great, but still requires a bit of a monster PC to power it.
It seems to have found a niche with jumpscare horror games.
FPS/anything else is a bit of a stretch. the motion sickness is real.
Fun, and a really cool experience. Not going to buy one myself for another few years. But that's me all over tbh.
It's not for me, I kind of like the idea of it - but I wouldn't trust my family if I was blind and deaf to the outside world for any length of time.
Ive basically been waiting for VR to takeover the world since the first ones were mooted years ago...was it as long ago as the 80's? I havent had chance to have a go on any of the headsets yet, i dont fancy the PS4 version as the reviews arent particularly good. Anyway ive bought myself a VERY powerful laptop, i was after something powerful anyway for 4K video editing, but then got reading about the Vive and the Oculus and ended up buying an Alienware with a monster gfx card that is VR certified. I wont be buying any VR for a good while, the laptop has drained the account for a while, but im itching to have a try...and see if i my wonky vision in one eye will affect me too much! Anyone want to buy a PS4?
Didn't find motion sickness that much of an issue with the latest Rift, it was ****ing awesome in DCS World.

DANNNGERRRRR ZONE!!! 😀
His flying is ****ing terrible though.
I borrowed an Oculus Rift for a while (last year, development kit) and played Elite: Dangerous with it, with a moderately powerful PC (definitely not a monster)... was awesome for flying around in space and dogfighting being able to track ships around you, much less good for anything involving reading small text. Got a slight hint of motion sickness after playing for over an hour on one occasion.
To me it only really makes sense for games where you are sat in a cockpit, and it's quite a steep learning curve managing the controls when you can't see your joystick, throttle or keyboard... but when it works it really really works...

That's what I was just thinking. I guess it would be easier if your on-screen controls matched your physical controls, but even then I can imagine it's tough getting started.

Elite does actually show your joystick and throttle in the cockpit, which sort of helps (but not much) - until you have memorised your button bindings it's a struggle not being able to look at a list to remind yourself which one is fire missiles and which one is engage docking computers...
Don't think it's quite their yet.
Just that your relying on so many cameras and gives an jolting visual experience
Struggling to see any reason as to why I might want to buy one. There's more than enough actual reality around to enjoy, without pissing around with some sort of virtual reality.
You can say that about pretty much any type of televised entertainment.
Including this forum.

That's what a HOTAS and voice activated commands are for.... 😛

what have you tried?
i have a rift cv1. it's bloody amazing, frankly. playing elite dangerous and a car racing sim, so a seated experience, but now they have the touch controllers out really the only thing stopping me going for the stand up method of play is taking over the other spare bedroom. but now i think about it, i haven't used that for a while...
i didn't go for the vive as support for elite dangerous was lacking, and at least last time i looked, still is. otherwise i suspect the vive and rift offer very similar experiences, though i understand the rift is more comfortable to wear, too.

I did buy a Thrustmaster HOTAS, as it happens... but I drew the line at voice commands - there are limits on how insane I'm prepared to look while sat at my computer!

Yea as above. I tried one (PlayStation or HTC, I'm not sure). It was a zombie killer game. absolutely amazing experience ( a bit like when the Wii as it had nunchuck controllers).
I use a Vive on a driving/flying rig which is pretty amazing. I use it for some roomscale stuff too, got a 3.5x2.5m play space for games like Raw Data. For racing its brilliant, other than the current lack of resolution and narrow FOV issues. It's definitely a early adoption luxury, hopefully the 2nd and 3rd generations will be much higher pixel density, wider FOV and include wireless and eye tracking for foveated rendering.
Me and some mates had quick goes on another friend's Vive, mostly playing the demo games I think. It was interesting but a bit cumbersome and took up a lot of space. As there were a bunch of us there at the time the most fun probably came from laughing at whoever was wearing the rig at the time, as you will look like a pillock while doing so.
Not tried it myself, I was in an Elite: Dangerous Wing with a guy using the HTC Vive and Voice Attack. Sounded odd over Discord but he was pretty damn good.
I'm half interested, but if I had the cash to layout on a Vive then it would be at the end of a list of bike bits I'd want to buy first.
Just in the process of buying a decent PC but won't have funds after for VR kit, which is probably a good thing as I think it still needs another year or two to develop (ideally the wireless stuff would arrive then but I have my doubts).
fair enough, it aint cheap!
note the minimum requirements for the rift have actually dropped since launch as they have made software advances.
there's little doubt it will get better, higher resolution etc. whether or not it will get substantially cheaper, i don't know. maybe 25-30% over the next 5 years, but the tech is pretty dedicated, you're basically buying a smartphone and a set of controllers, and i'm not sue how big the market really is.
