I've had tendonitis for the last few weeks, this morning pain in my thumb and unable to move the thumb outwards (flexion). A&E orthopaedic consultant stated that it is the EPL tendon that has ruptured, that they can't operate at weekends and I'm to go back Monday for ultrasound to find the end of it and surgery to reattach it. If that fails then potentially they can graft another tendon on, but he did say that it sometimes doesn't work and thumb can be left a bit useless.

Any got experience? Feeling a bit hacked off supposed to be going to Alps for a week in 6 weeks time

About 12 years ago, I cut my hand pretty bad and went for stitches. A week or so later, I bumped my little finger on something and felt an intense pain. I had broken partially cut tendon to my little finger and I could no longer bend it at all. I had surgery a week or two later, and they were able to repair it. It's not 100%; the finger does not quite straighten out completely so it always has a little bit of a curve in it. But at least it bends. I was worried that if I didn't get it fixed, that I'd be catching the finger on things and breaking a bone or dislocating it. I've had no problems with it since the repair.

During the surgery, they secured the tendon to a small plastic button (just like on a shirt) that was sutured to the tip of my finger. That stayed of for a couple of weeks. I also had to wear a plastic brace that kept my hand curled in a neutral position (to not overstress the repair while healing) for several weeks.

Moral of my story - men should not use kitchen knives!

Try completely rupturing your patella tendon with about 17times your body weight going through it at the time (I was sprinting). The tendon is now only just feeling as though its as strong as it was (2yrs) and a second recent operation was carried out to trying to correct alignment issues so that i may possibly get rid of the limp and run again.

I would rather break 20 bones than try to repair a snapped tendon. My consultant described it as trying to join two ends of wire. Each strand etc. Its also guesswork about getting the length correct.

What i am trying to say is the tendon should hopefully repair but there is no guarentee the joint will function the same. Just thank your lucky stars its your thumb

slightly different but I ruptured one of my bi cep tendons after shoulder surgery, they usually don't bother reattaching as there are two upper arm tendons and i'd only just had quite major surgery. I'm left with a slightly odd looking bi cep resembling pop eye's! and about a 15% loss of strength & stamina in that arm

I'm the same broken both clavicles and got metal pins in shoulder, but never had this problem so not sure what to expect. Funny thing is that it finally snapped using the TV remote

TheLittlestHobo +1

except I ruptured mine courtesy of a driver not looking where they were going and cutting across me. My left knee shattered the rear passenger window , very ouchy!

Luckily mine healed quite quickly (just over a year) but I've been told no running due to tears all over the cartlidges behind the patella.

I snapped my achilles tendon two years ago playing football. Went to A&E the night it happened. Went undiagnosed at the time. I was sent home with the obligitory tubi-grip and two ibuprofen. Eventually diagnosed Three weeks later as I could not step off on that foot. Surgery and then eight weeks in plaster. Try not to worry too much at this stage. At least you know the problem and are dealing with it.

Similar to athgray, 'cept mine was done playing badminton and was diagnosed on the night.

Not really sure how that relates to healing time in your case, but I'd be taking it easy for a while.

I've broken at least 3 ankles (all different ones 😉 ) and the tendon was far more of a bitch to repair.
