Couple of trips to the alps planned this summer and having done the journey with and without cruise control in the past couple of years, it's definitely better with it.
Got a quote yesterday from a local auto electrician. £600 to supply and fit!
I can see units for sale on-line and they vary between £200 and £400. I'm guessing they're all pretty much the same, maybe just a couple of preset options on the more expensive model.
My vehicle has the CANBUS system so in theory it should be plug and play, and some models had it as standard so hopefully the ECU is already set up.
Has anyone done it themselves or is it definitely a job for a specialist. I reckon I could get the £200 unit and find someone to fit it for substantially less than £400.

On my Alfa 156 it was simply a case of buying the stalk and lower steering column shroud and plugging it in - total cost about £50. Might be worth seeing if your vehicle is similar?

Some (most?) Alfa 156s had all the cruise control cleverness installed as standard, it was just the control stick that was needed to enable it.
I picked one up from a scrappy for about £35 and Robert's your auntie's live-in lover...

I bought the Audi CC stalk for £60 IIRC and swapped it over on my Golf. Then had to enable CC in the ECU using Vagcom.
There was a bulk buy thing on UKMarkIVs.net with the stalk, instructions and SW.
Depends on the vehicle.
On plenty of VW/Audi/Seat cars it's pretty much plug in the stalk and get someone to switch it on with a computer. That's pretty much what I did on my A4 and it cost about £100.
Other cars it can be anywhere between a bit more difficult than that and impossible.

Parts cost £55 from VW (genuine parts) and fitting was a doddle.
No wiring to do, just plug in and fit.

If you are going to use cruise control on Peage just take care of sections at 110 as its easy to set at 130 and "forget"
FWIW I prefer to drive without using it
And worth remembering most speedos and cruise control systems over-read by 5% or so... My indicated 75 is 70
I tried the cruise control on the motorbike for the first time yesterday. Being able to take your hands off the bars and just keep going is *very* strange…

I fitted it to my BMW - just needed the stalk and to cut and crimp a couple of wires - didn't need recoding either which saved me a bit.
Dremeled a hole in the plastic around the steering wheel to fit the stalk
Think the stalk cost about £50

I can't seem to find the official factory fit option cheap even on ebay so these aftermarket ones seem to be the option

to an old mondeo I had, as it was never available with cruise from the factory (old tdci diesel engine which used a physical cable to the fuel pump rather than anything canbus-like).
It was a cool system (actually pulled the trottle cable, and took a speed reading off the back of the stereo, plus some switches under the pedals for clutch etc), a massive bodge and a bit of a pain in the arse to fit, but after 70,000 miles with it i was very glad 🙂 I do have it in the loft somewhere still, but I doubt it'll ever be used again as most canbus-based systems would be much more simple
Hmm. It appears an Alfa option might fit and is significantly cheaper. I'm going to pop the steering shroud off tonight and make sure the connector is there, but the Alfa 147 stalk seems to fit a bunch of Fiats as long as the connector is there and it's only £70 from eBay!
You might need someone with Examiner or similar to enable it with the 147 and your car being CANBUS (the 156 isn't).
I nearly did it in my Astra, but i think it was missing some kind of brake/accelerator sensor which was needed for it to work as well as the stalk.

So far I've seen it being done on the Stilo, Brava and Bravo. On this guide here the dash display is the same as mine so hopefully the same gubbins underneath.

Did it on my van...£70 for a new wash wipe stalk, plug it in and all works. Never trust a dealer... They will want to plug it in to reprogramme and it's not always needed!

I did it a few weeks ago. Was £500 but definitely worth it to remove the hassle (over just buying the bits myself). If you're in Devon then I know a good guy for it.

The garage fitted mine when I bought it, it does need programming to enable it so stalk so only half the job, it also depends on what you have and haven't got fitted such as electric Windows etc as the loom needs to be there, have a look here for options:
