OK.. calm down, calm down.. not that sort of row

Over on the belly fat thread people are advocating running as a good way to shift a little paunch, but my knee will not allow me to even run for a bus..

Mrs yunki has become a bit of a gym bunny of late and is trying to recruit me to that dark cult.. So as I was flicking through their list of classes earlier I noticed a rowing class (row fit?), which may be one of the few things that I feel I could get into in the gym..

what will it do for me fitness wise?

Get a road bike. Even a 30min blast up some hills is preferable to going to the gym.

rowing in the gym can be good - depends what you get to look at whilst rowing though. It's as much fun as turbo-training on a bike otherwise

Lots. Legs. Cardio. Posture. Core. (not much upper body stuff)

But, take the class, you'll do plenty of damage if you don't learn the technique properly.

Difficult thing to find interesting enough to stick with. When I was a kid we had one of those inertia reel type rowing machines in the house. If you rowed vigorously enough the base would shift on the floor a few mm with each stroke, so we'd have time trials - seeing who could cross the living room in the shortest time.

Theres a gym i ride past sometimes in town , with great big windows lookng out and the machines are against it .

I like waving at all the misrable looking folk on spin bikes and running machines as i ride past 🙂

It's good but it's not that suited to lower intensity stuff. No doubt you could sit on an ergo for 2 hours but it would be transcendentally boring.
Great for a 5k or 10k stint which can really put you through the wringer. 5K would take 20 mins for your average fit bloke, +/- accordingly.

It's a 45 min session so I guess it's aiming to be pretty intense..

Sam - we're looking at moving back down to live on the coast this year, and I've fancied a wave ski or maybe a fishing kayak for years now..
It's about 4th on my list of 'things I need to get' though so realistically it's a long way off

I sacked off the gym here because it was way too expensive and always packed to the rafters but if I could just pay a fiver a month to only use the rowing machine I would deffo do that- always really liked it for some reason and it feels like it exercises loads of muscle groups at once

Duggan, check out your local rowing club (if there's one nearby). They may have a "land" membership which allows use of the rowing machine (and more than likely other gym apparatus) which is cheap enough. There will always be someone there to talk you through some interesting pieces too.

For some unknown reason I find the rowing machine fun. Put on some decent music and I can do it for 1/2 an hour easily.

well.. I did 7500 in 40 minutes with the instructor mixing it up a bit with different strokes, intensity and some ab work at the backstop etc..

I thought I was gonna pass out in a big sweaty heap by the end of it.. the 20 or so overweight elderly women that made up the rest of the class barely broke a sweat.. 😯
