I need a number between 1 and 150 inclusive for a little raffle I am running : http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/win-trout-lights-for-5-support-team-bulheart

Suggestions from existing ticket holders will be treated with suspicion

I actually worked out how to do this, I just felt guilty about bumping the original thread so much.

I have 30 tickets left to shift and am hoping to get the draw completed this week.

Please buy some (or some more), they make great valentine presents.

I use random.org for some work. It's pretty good as it's taken from atmospheric data. You can specify the form of your data and how many random numbers. These options are chosen using GET so you can form a ULR to automate retrieval of random numbers and wack them into a txt file and then do what ever you want.

The Brick - for the purposes of selecting a tombola ticket it suffices.

Yes it's not truly random, but then FPU's* cant be made to act randomly can they

* they do the maths calcs dont they?.

Out of interest what do you use random numbers for in your work?

I know of 112 possible methods. That's one hundred and twelve. One, one, two.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Perl is evil.

Buy an Arduino board and a small LCD screen. Then just use the noise on the serial port and the randomseed() and random() functions to create a random number between the min and max numbers.

That puts up iDave's random number count to 113.

If you're making up a random number for your tax return, it's a good idea for it to end in a seven.

I think you will find tombola tickets are a very serious business.

It's not something I know a huge amount about but algorithm to create sudo-random numbers is quite a field of research. All you can have is algorithm that produce sequences on numbers that look random so the computer is never really doing a random calc as such.

Out of interest what do you use random numbers for in your work?

It's just a mathematical model which needs some random seeding. I pull then random number off the internet, seed the model run the model for a load of different seeding.

DD - actually if you're making up any numbers for your tax return, be sure to follow Benfords law:

Benford's law, also called the first-digit law, states that in lists of numbers from many (but not all) real-life sources of data, the leading digit is distributed in a specific, non-uniform way. According to this law, the first digit is 1 about 30% of the time, and larger digits occur as the leading digit with lower and lower frequency, to the point where 9 as a first digit occurs less than 5% of the time.

One of my favouritest number phenomenons 🙂

Oooh, that's cool. Actually, I'm pretty good about the TR (though when I started out, a bit younger and less organised, I was all over the place with them).

The "seven" rule is a quick rule of thumb for when I'm doing quotes. 😉

Yup, it's great! I remember it bit on the radio, where there were saying about sets of figures being routinely processed for number distribution to detect fraud.

Anyway, back to the point.
We've clearly democratically established that the answer is 12.

Well for my TR, they're certainly more likely to start with lower numbers, but there ain't nothing random about that. 😡

Undoubtedly - after all your turnover of £1,000,000 starts with a 1 compared to £9,000 for mine 🙂

Ian - unless you are using a different email address 12 is not the best number for you to suggest 😉
